FORÂ STARTERS
The homestretch of the pre-conference portion of the 2022 season begins this week for the CSUN women's volleyball team (3-6, 0-0 Big West) as the Matadors travel to Tucson, Ariz. for the Wildcat Classic at McKale Center. CSUN takes on UTEP (4-5) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (0-11) in neutral site matches on Friday before taking on the host Arizona Wildcats (7-1) Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
The Matadors won two of three last weekend in the San Francisco Bay Area, sweeping Penn (3-0) before coming back from two sets down to knock off previously unbeaten San Francisco (3-2) on the road. CSUN capped the weekend with a 3-0 loss at Saint Mary's.

CSUN's two neutral site matches (UTEP, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) this weekend will be streamed live by Flosports (subscription required) while Saturday's match will be streamed live on Arizona's Pac-12 Live Stream channel.

SCOUTING THE TOURNAMENT FIELD
UTEP (4-5) won two of its three matches at the Oral Roberts tournament last weekend. The Miners dropped a straight-set decision to Tulsa in their opener before topping both Abilene Christian (3-1) and host Oral Roberts (3-1). Both Hula Crisostomo and Marian Ovalle were named to the All-Tournament Team while Serena Patterson had a team-high 18 kills in the win over ORU. Series: Friday's match is the third meeting all-time between the Matadors and Miners with CSUN holding a 2-0 lead in the series. The two teams last met in 2017 in Portland, Ore. with CSUN winning in straight sets.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (0-11) remained winless on the season after dropping three matches at the Adidas Invitational in Houston, Texas. The Islanders fell to Texas Tech (3-0) to open the tournament before falling to Rice (3-0) and Brown (3-2) on day two. Series: Friday's match is the first-ever meeting between the Matadors and Islanders.
Arizona (7-1) bounced back from its first loss of the season (North Carolina) to win the Aztec Invitational in San Diego last weekend. The Wildcats defeated both Sacramento State and Maryland in five sets before sweeping host San Diego State. Puk Stubbe led Arizona's attack with a career high 20 kills with a .340 hitting percentage. Jaelyn Hodge followed with 15 kills and Zyonna Fellows had a season best 12 kills. Series: Saturday's match is ninth meeting all-time between the Matadors and Wildcats with Arizona holding a 6-2 series lead. In the most recent meeting between the two teams in Sacramento in 2018, the Wildcats swept the Matadors for their third straight win in the series.
NEVAREZ ON THE CSUN CAREER CHARTS
Nevarez, in her fourth season at CSUN, is closing in on several career milestones in 2022. With a team-high 101 kills this season, Nevarez is now 138 kills away from becoming the 14th player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills. She heads into the week having appeared in 345 career sets while posting 862 career kills on 2,580 career attempts along with 614 career digs, 147 career blocks and 62 career aces. Her best season offensively was in 2019 when she connected for 285 kills while she set a season-high for digs with 245 in 2021. This season, Nevarez is hitting a season-high .244 on a team-high 266 swings.
ANDERSON STAYS HOT ON OFFENSE
Junior Lauryn Anderson continued her impressive offensive start to the 2022 season. In addition to averaging a career-high 2.34 kills per set through nine matches, Anderson is connecting at a .368 hitting clip which leads the Matadors and ranks fourth in the Big West. A career .285 hitter over two-plus seasons, Anderson is also the Matadors' chief blocker this season, averaging 0.88 blocks per set with six solo and 22 assists.
MATADOR QUICK SETS
This past weekend saw the debut of freshman Kaia Kanan in the CSUN lineup. The setter from Pacific Palisades (Palisades High School) made her Matador debut against San Francisco and recorded 14 assists along with six digs and three kills in three sets of action. She then played in all three sets in a loss to Saint Mary's, posting seven assists ... After picking up her first career kill against Air Force on Aug. 27, Magdalena Juric connected for a season-high seven kills on 18 swings in CSUN's 3-0 win over Penn ... Sophomore Carisa Barron took a career-high 38 attacks in the Matadors' 3-2 win over San Francisco while also handing out 20 assists and 11 digs. The double-double for Barron was her first this season and fifth in her career.
TOURNAMENT TIME
This week's trip to Arizona marks the fourth and final week of non-conference matches on CSUN's 32-match regular-season schedule. After meeting teams from the Missouri Valley (Drake), Mountain West (Air Force) Southland (Texas A&M-Commerce) at the season opening Air Force tournament, the Matadors took on another Mountain West team (Nevada) in Spokane (Sept, 2-3) along with teams from the Big Sky Conference (Idaho State) and West Coast Conference (Gonzaga). CSUN split with another pair of WCC teams last weekend in San Francisco and St. Mary's, while also defeating Penn from the Ivy League. The Matadors conclude the non-conference slate with three matches at the Wildcat Classic this weekend, facing UTEP (Conference USA), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Southland Conference) on Friday followed by their final non-conference match against host Arizona (Pac-12). The 20-match Big West Conference schedule opens with a two-match road trip (Sept. 23-24) as CSUN travels to UC Irvine and UC San Diego during the conference-opening weekend.
PRICE NAMED CSUN'SÂ DIRECTOR OF WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
John Price was named Director of Women's Volleyball at CSUN in June of 2022. He will oversee both the indoor and beach volleyball programs. Price returned to the CSUN indoor program in 2021 where he served as an assistant on interim head coach Susie Terrusa's staff. Price previously as an assistant coach on Jeff Stork's women's volleyball coaching staff from 2012-2015. He also served one season as the head coach of the CSUN women's volleyball team in 1993, compiling a record of 12-17 as an NCAA Independent.
Price's CSUN resume also includes 12 seasons as the head coach of the nationally-ranked Matador men's volleyball team (1986-1997) where he amassed an overall record of 194-158 (.551) leading CSUN to a 23-10 record and a berth in the 1993 NCAA Championship match where the Matadors fell to UCLA. Price then moved on to CSU Bakersfield women's volleyball and remains the winningest coach in program history. He posted a career record of 232-169 (.579) over 14 seasons, leading the Roadrunners to a 28-4 overall record in his first season. Price was also at the helm of the CSUB program when the school made the transition from NCAA Division II to Division I status. Price's 2008 squad was the first Roadrunner team in any sport to post a winning record (18-15) in the school's Division I era.
LOOKING AHEAD
After three final non-conference matches this weekend in Arizona, the Matadors open the 2022 Big West season at UC Irvine on Sept. 23. CSUN will also will travel to UC San Diego (Sept. 24) before hosting CSU Bakersfield in its home opener on Sept. 30 at 5 p.m.
