CSUN Drops 2-1 Decision to UC Irvine
9/12/2022 9:39:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (1-7) received a goal from Cindy Arteaga in the 90th minute, but it was not enough to overcome UC Irvine in a 2-1 non-conference loss on Monday at Matador Soccer Field. Arteaga, who netted her third goal this season, scored via a penalty kick.
The Anteaters came out of the gates quickly, earning a shot on goal from Sophie Gillies before Lilli Rask hit the post on a shot from the right side. UCI would then hit the net in the 10th minute, capitalizing on a CSUN turnover. Playing on the left side of the box, Alex Jaquez and Aislynn Crowder played a give and go that led to Jaquez taking the ball past the CSUN defense. Jaquez then sent a cross to the far post where Gillies finished the play for a UCI 1-0 lead.
Falling behind early, the Matadors began to pressure the Anteaters on the offensive end. Arteaga had her shot saved in the 13th minute while Kacie Garrity put another shot on frame six minutes later. Cassidy Imperial-Pham would have her shot saved by Glo Hinojosa as well in the 26th minute. In all, CSUN had four shots on goal in the first half, however, the Anteaters went into intermission still ahead by a goal.
In the second half, UCI once again got into the scoring column early, this time in the 49th minute. Rask would dribble down the right side of the field before sending a pass to the far post. Jaquez received the pass before dishing off a pass of her own to the center of the box where Desiree Mendoza finished the play with a header to make it a 2-0 game.
The Matadors continued to battle down the stretch of the second half while staring at a two-goal deficit. Arteaga and Imperial-Pham both put shots on goal in the period while Arteaga missed high as well in the 68th minute.
After a pair of missed shots from Harlee Martin-Ditillo and Cami Alarcon, CSUN would earn one last opportunity on a drive up the field. Martin-Ditillo would make a run toward the middle of the field, eventually making her way into the UCI box. There, Martin-Ditillo was fouled, resulting in a CSUN penalty kick with under a minute to play. Arteaga took the penalty shot and calmly hit the back of the net to cut the deficit to 2-1.
UCI though would manage the remaining seconds on the clock to hold on for a one-goal win.
GAME NOTES
UCI held a narrow 15-14 edge in shots and 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Anteaters also earned all three corner kicks on the night. A total of 25 fouls were called with CSUN whistled for 16 of them. CSUN's Cindy Arteaga and UCI's Kiera Smeenge were shown yellow cards.
Arteaga notched her sixth career goal with the Matadors. She also set a new career high in goals with three scored.
Hayden Mauldin recorded four saves in front of the net. CSUN defenders Erin Anderson, Gabriela Robles and Ashly Torres along with midfielder Brooke Mobeck played a full 90 minutes on the night.
ACCORDING TO COACH CHRISTINE JOHNSON
"I think we started a little bit slow, and we're kind of making a habit of that, which is very frustrating as a coaching staff. But in terms of dealing with Irvine's attack, I think we did a fairly good job. We made some adjustments. It just came down to we were very reactive and they were very proactive about their movement. We put ourselves in another situation where we were chasing the game and we couldn't catch up.
I think we've done a good job planning [during non-conference play]. We are peaking right at the right time, and now we just have to figure out how to win. I don't think it comes down to a tactical thing or fitness, it's just getting over that hump. Today, we had several shots on goal and several opportunities. We're getting closer there, but we're just not there yet. We're going to take a mental day tomorrow, regroup and get ready for Thursday."
