COACH JOHN PRICE SAID
"It's a tough transition to play five sets, have a quick break and play five sets again. We knew earlier in the week that we might face a situation like this and we were mentally prepared for it. As athletes, you're supposed to be able to fight through adversity and it was nice to see us fight through it today and get a couple of wins.
"Carisa (Barron) is getting better and is choosing better attack lines as a hitter, Seeing her play solid defense this year has been a really pleasant surprise. All three setters are really doing a good job setting up our hitters for success. Maggie (Juric) had some key blocks and some kills on the left side and it was really nice to see her contribute."
SET 1
CSUN had one of its best hitting sets of the season in the opening frame, connecting at a .326 clip after committing just one hitting error on 46 swings with 16 kills. In a set that featured 10 ties and four lead changes, neither team held more than a two-point lead until an Orshoff kill gave CSUN a 14-11 cushion. Despite the Islanders trimming the lead to one on a trio of occasions, the Matadors would build the lead back to four at 20-16 when Anderson served one of her two aces in the match. An ensuing 5-1 run by TAMUCC tied the score at 21-21 and the teams would trade sideouts until 25-25 when consecutive kills by Orshoff sent CSUN to the 27-25 win.
SET 2
The Matadors could not maintain their offensive momentum into the second set as they were out-hit ..306 to .189 as the Islanders evened the match. Leading by two at 5-3, TAMUCC would outscore CSUN 10-3 over the next 13 points to open up a 13-6 lead. The Islanders would extend the lead to eight (18-10) before pulling away for the 25-17 win.
SET 3
The Matadors led a majority of the third set before the Islanders rallied late for the win. CSUN led by four early on before extending the margin to six (14-8) following a Juric kill. The Matadors maintained a six-point cushion at 17-11 and again at 18-12 when TAMUCC began to chip away at the lead. A 5-0 run cut the lead to one before an Anderson kill ended the run. CSUN would eventually build its lead back to three at 23-20 when another 3-0 run by the Islanders knotted the score. Hunter's kill set the Matadors up with set point at 24-23 but TAMUCC would outscore CSUN 4-1 down the stretch to pull out the 27-25 win.
SET 4
Needing a win to stay in the match, the Matadors overcame an early 5-2 TAMUCC lead to lead 9-6 following a Kaia Kanan kill. The lead would change hands when the Islanders put together a 7-2 run to reclaim the lead 13-11. CSUN still trailed by two at 18-16 when a Nevarez block, an Islander hitting error and a Kanan ace put the Matadors back in front 19-18. After the two teams played to a 20-20 tie, a Hunter kill sent CSUN on a set-clinching 5-0 run.
SET 5
In a tightly contested fifth set, CSUN claimed the first two points and would eventually hold a 6-3 lead. A 5-1 run by TAMUCC quickly erased the lead and put the Islanders in front 8-7. A Barron kill would fuel a 5-1 run by the Matadors that put CSUN in the driver's seat at 12-9. The Islanders would claim three of the next four points to cut the Matador lead to one at 13-12. A Nevarez kill out of a CSUN timeout gave the Matadors match point at 14-12. A pair of Islanders kills would save two set points before Hunterand Orshoff connected for kills giving CSUN the 16-14 win.
