SPOKANE, Wash. – The CSUN women's volleyball team hit a season-high .241 but the Matadors had trouble stopping an Idaho State team that hit .341 as the Bengals won in straight sets Friday afternoon at the Gonzaga Invitational at the Charlotte Y. Martin Centre.
CSUN (1-4) connected for 38 team kills while committing a season-low 12 errors but Idaho State (4-1) won the hitting and serving battle in a 25-19, 25-18, 25-16 win.
KEY STATISTICS
• Senior Nicole Nevarez led the Matadors for the second straight match and third time this season after putting down a match-high 16 kills. Nevarez, who also had nine digs, two of CSUN's three aces and two blocks, connected at a season-high .469 clip on 32 swings, finishing just a shade under her career high in hitting percentage.
• Carisa Barron and Taylor Hunter each added six kills with Barron hitting .294 on 17 swings to go with 20 assists and four digs. Taylor Orshoff chipped in five kills (.308) and Lauryn Anderson had four kills (.176) and a pair of blocks.
• Barron and Emily Sparks combined for 34 assists with Sparks adding three digs and the Matadors' third ace.
• Mitchell wound up sharing team-high honors with Nevarez as each scooped up nine digs.
• Idaho State, which posted nine aces, had two players with double figures in kills led by Jamie Streit who had a team-high 13 on .458 hitting.
FIRST SET
The Matadors were forced to play from behind in all three sets as Idaho State jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening frame and would never trail. CSUN was still within striking distance at 14-10 following a co-block from Anderson and Hunter and another Bengal hitting error. But Idaho State would outscore the Matadors 6-1 over the next seven points to open up a 20-11 cushion. Facing set point at 24-15, CSUN saved four straight set points before a Matador service error gave the Bengals the 25-19 win.
SECOND SET
CSUN would trail 8-3 after 11 points before pulling within three (9-6) following an Abigail Macias kill. But a 6-3 Idaho State run opened up a 15-9 lead and the Matadors would not get within five points the remainder of the set.
THIRD SET
Idaho State would outscore CSUN 9-1 to open the final set and the Bengals never looked back. Kills from Nevarez at 13-5 and 14-6 kept the Matadors within seven before one of her two aces pulled CSUN within six at 14-8. An Orshoff-Anderson block got the Matadors within five (15-10) before a 5-1 ISU run opened up a 20-11 margin.
