COACH JOHN PRICE SAID
"I feel like we're playing pretty good volleyball 80% of the match but we're just making too many errors at crucial times. In four of our five losses we've lost close sets by simply making a bunch of mistakes. I feel like we're close to turning things around and I'm optimistic we'll be significantly better by the time we start conference play."
FIRST SET
The Matadors held a pair of two-point leads early in the opening set before a Nevarez solo block opened up a 7-4 cushion. But a 5-0 run by the Zags erased the lead and gave Gonzaga the lead for good at 9-7. CSUN would tie the score on several occasions, the last at 17-17 when three straight points by the Zags gave Gonzaga the margin it needed to take a 25-19 win.
SECOND SET
Looking for their first set win of the weekend, the Matadors overcame an early 7-4 deficit to lead 10-7 following an Orshoff kill. The Zags would battle back to tie the score at 11-11 and the two teams would then trade sideouts until an Anderson kill gave CSUN a two-point lead at 20-18. After knotting the score at 20-20, Gonzaga would trim the lead to one on a pair of occasions before an Anderson ace and a Nevarez kill sent the Matadors to the 25-22 win.
THIRD SET
CSUN was not able to carry the momentum of set two into the third set as the Zags claimed the first four points of the frame and would never trail. The Matadors would trail by as many as eight (13-5) before a 7-3 run, capped by a Juric kill, pulled CSUN within four at 16-12. But an ensuing 8-3 run by the hosts would seal a 25-16 win.
FOURTH SET
The Matadors again faced an early three-point deficit before putting together a 5-0 run, highlight by an Anderson-Juric block, to take a 10-8 lead. An Anderson ace forced a Gonzaga timeout with CSUN leading 15-12. Kills by Nevarez and Hunter maintained a three-point Matador leads at 17-14 and 18-15 when a 5-0 run by the Zags forced a CSUN timeout at 20-18. The Matadors would rally to within one at 20-19, 21-20, 22-21 and 23-22 before a pair of kills sent Gonzaga to the 25-22 victory.
