Matadors Fall to Nevada to Open Gonzaga Invitational

SPOKANE, Wash. – Senior Nicole Nevarez led CSUN with 15 kills but Nevada pulled out three deuce game wins in defeating the Matadors in straight sets Friday at the Gonzaga Invitational at the Charlotte Y. Martin Centre.
CSUN (1-3) served a season-high nine aces as a team but hit a collective .128 in the 25-23, 25-23, 31-29 loss. Nevada picks up its first win of the season to improve to 1-3.
KEY STATISTICS
• Nevarez hit .216 on a season-high 37 attacks to go with seven digs and a pair of solo blocks.
• Sophomore Carisa Barron added a career-high nine kills (.160) and narrowly missed a triple-double by adding 16 assists and a season-high nine digs. No other CSUN hitter had more than five kills.
• In addition to Barron's 16 assists, setter Emily Sparks had 15 assists and 13 digs for her second double-double of the season. The Big West leader in aces added two more on Friday as three other Matadors (Breanna Mitchell, Lauryn Anderson, Elizabeth Gannon) also had a pair of aces.
• Mitchell led all players in the match with 16 digs in addition to her two aces and four assists.
• The Wolfpack posted a slight edge in kills (42-40) and blocks (9-8) while the Matadors had the lead in digs (60-54) and aces (9-4).also had an edge in digs (50-43).
• Kayla Afoa had a match-high 16 kills (.300) to lead Nevada which wound up hitting .189 as a team.
FIRST SET
The Wolfpack claimed the first four points of the match before a Nevarez kill got CSUN on the board. Two more Nevada points boosted the lead to 6-1 and the Matadors would eventually trail by seven at 12-5. CSUN would rally out a timeout, using a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to 13-10. An ensuing 4-0 run by the Wolfpack would push the lead back to seven and the Matadors still trailed by seven (18-11) before engineering a 7-0 run behind Anderson's serving to knot the score. The score remained tied at 20-20 when Nevada used three straight kills to open up a 23-20 lead. An Abigail Macias kill, a Nevarez solo block and a Wolfpack hitting error pulled CSUN even before Nevada would claim the final two points in a 25-23 win.
SECOND SET
Neither team would lead by more than two points throughout the entire second set as the Matadors overcame an early 6-4 Nevada lead to reclaim a 7-6 advantage on a Layla Cerderlind ace. The Wolfpack would lead by two again at 10-8 when a Nevarez kill sparked a 4-0 CSUN run that gave the Matadors a two-point lead at 12-10. Nevada would battle back to tie the score at 13-13 and the two teams would trade sideouts until 20-20 when a Nevada hitting error gave the Matadors a 21-20 lead. CSUN would also lead by one at 22-21 and 23-22 before a Matador service error and two straight Nevada aces clinched the 25-23 win.
THIRD SET
Needing a win to stay in the match, the Matadors fell behind early before rallying to force extra points. CSUN was down 8-3 in the early going and still trailed by five (16-11) midway through the set. Trailing 17-12, the Matadors outscored Nevada 4-1 over the next five points to narrow the gap to 18-16. CSUN could not cut the deficit to less than two points before facing match point at 24-21. Following a Matador timeout, a Wolfpack hitting error saved one match point before kills by Hunter and Nevarez and a Gannon ace gave CSUN set point at 25-24. The Wolfpack would answer with a kill and would also save set points at 26-25, 27-26 and 28-27 before outscoring the Matadors 4-1 down the stretch to pull out the 31-29 win.
