Matadors Open Homestand with UCSB, Cal Poly This Week

FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (2-9-1, 0-2-1 Big West) opens a three-match homestand this week at Matador Soccer Field. The Matadors host UC Santa Barbara on Thursday at 7 p.m. before facing Cal Poly on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Ghizal Hasan on the call.
LAST TIME OUT
The Matadors went 0-1-1 in last week's Big West action. CSUN dropped a 2-1 decision at Matador Soccer Field to Cal State Fullerton last Thursday. The Matadors though earned their first point of conference play with a 1-1 draw at UC Davis on Sunday.
In Thursday's loss to the Titans, the Matadors struck first with a goal from Ashley Cruz in the 12th minute on an assist from Cindy Arteaga. The Titans would even the match six minutes later as the teams battled to a 1-1 tie heading into intermission. Fullerton found the go-ahead goal in the 73rd minute and held off a late charge from the Matadors in the remaining minutes. Hayden Mauldin racked up seven saves in front of the net on the night.
CSUN again struck first against UC Davis, picking up a strike from freshman Cassidy Imperial-Pham off a feed from Cruz in the 13th minute. The Matadors nearly went ahead 2-0 later in the half, but Arteaga missed a penalty kick. The Aggies would eventually hit the equalizer in the 64th minute, breaking up CSUN's scoreless bid. Mauldin again was strong defensively, registering five saves to preserve the tie.
MATADOR HEADLINES
Cassidy Imperial-Pham netted her first career goal in Sunday's draw at UC Davis. On the season, Imperial-Pham has recorded three points, all of which in Big West play. She is the third Matador to score a goal this season.
Cindy Arteaga, who collected a point last week, remains atop The Big West leaderboard in shots (48) and shots on goal (22) while she ranks second in goals (6) and third in points (13). Ashley Cruz is eighth in the league in shots on goal (9), 12th in points (6), 15th in goals (2) and 16th in shots (14). Cruz also shares 10th place with Kacie Garrity on the Big West assist list (2). In saves, Hayden Mauldin has moved into sixth place with 40 saves.
In the CSUN record books, Arteaga has moved into fourth place on the career shot list with 131. With four more shots, Arteaga would overtake Kristy Krohn (2004-07) for third on the list. Arteaga also needs one more goal to reach 10 for her career, which would put her into a 13th place tie with Heather Schou (1995-97) on the CSUN career goals scored list.
SERIES HISTORY
UC Santa Barbara leads CSUN in the all-time series 17-11-1. The Gauchos snapped a two-match CSUN winning streak in the series last season with a 2-0 triumph in Santa Barbara. The Matadors have gone 2-0-1 over the last three meetings with the Gauchos at home including a 1-0 victory in 2019. The teams have become accustomed to close battles over the years as 10 of the last 12 meetings have been decided by one goal.
CSUN and Cal Poly are 9-9-3 against one another all-time in women's soccer. The Mustangs prevailed by a 3-0 margin over the Matadors in San Luis Obispo last season. Prior to 2021's match, CSUN had won five of six meetings. The Matadors come in with a three-match winning streak over the Mustangs at Matador Soccer Field.
SCOUTING UC SANTA BARBARA
UCSB holds a 1-6-4 record and 0-1-1 mark in Big West play. The team has played to a pair of draws over its last two matches including a 0-0 tie versus Hawai'i last Thursday. On the road, the Gauchos have gone 0-4-1 this season. Prior to the season, UCSB was picked to finish in sixth place by conference's head coaches. Paul Stumpf is in his 23rd season as head coach of the Gauchos.
Meg Burling has a team-high three goals and six points on the season while Lauren Helwig has two goals and one assist for five points. Three other Gauchos have also hit the back of the net. In goal, Evann Smith has played the most minutes of UCSB's goalkeepers (534 minutes), racking up 19 saves and one shutout.
SCOUTING CAL POLY
The Mustangs improved to 4-5-1 and 1-0-1 in Big West play last week after defeating San Diego 1-0 and playing to a 2-2 tie with Hawai'i. Cal Poly opened Big West play with a 4-0 triumph over rival UC Santa Barbara. The team has won two of six games thus far on the road. After earning a share of the regular season Big West championship in 2021, the Mustangs were picked to finish second by the conference's head coaches this season. Alex Crozier is in his 30th season as head coach of the Mustangs.
Peja Balanon leads the team in goals (3) and points (6) while Emily Lieber has a team-high three assists to go with a goal. Camille Lafaix and Megan Hansen have two goals apiece. In total, nine Mustangs have hit the net this season. Goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel sports a 1.66 GAA with 47 saves and three shutouts.
