NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer could not overcome two first-half goals from UC Santa Barbara in a 2-0 loss on Thursday at Matador Soccer Field. The Matadors (2-10-1, 0-3-1 Big West) were held to four shots on the night with two on goal. Freshman Hayden Mauldin recorded three saves in front of the goal.
The Gauchos (2-6-4, 1-1-1 Big West) struck first quickly, scoring at the 1:33 mark of the first half. Following a CSUN foul, the Gauchos earned a free kick leading to the scoring opportunity. Krysten Vasquez took the free kick and sent in a pass inside the box to Gia Cimring who finished the play for a quick 1-0 UCSB lead.
The Matadors weathered several UCSB attacks early in the match including a shot from Elise Ziem that was saved by Mauldin in the 19th minute. The Gauchos would eventually break through again later in the match, this time in the 37th minute. With the ball on the left side of the field, Shaye Douglas deposited a pass into the middle of the box where Meg Burling found the net via a header to double the UCSB lead.
Cindy Arteaga recorded both of CSUN's shots late in the first half with each attempt missing the frame as the score remained 2-0.
Arteaga put the Matadors' first shot on goal in the 63rd minute, but UCSB's Evann Smith made a routine two-handed save. The Gauchos would earn a pair of solid scoring chances minutes later from Ziem in the 78th minute and Burling in the 80th minute, however, each attempt went wide.
After a tough first half, CSUN's defense would turn things around in the second half. The Matadors saw six shot attempts from the Gauchos as well as six corner kicks, but would keep the ball out of the net. Mauldin helped the Matadors' cause with two saves, both of which in the final 10 minutes.
Arteaga took the final shot of the night in the 90th minute, which Smith saved cleanly to help secure the UCSB shutout.
GAME NOTES
The Gauchos outshot CSUN 14-4 on the night and led 5-2 in shots on goal. UCSB also posted six of the seven corner kicks in the match. CSUN had nine of the 14 fouls. The Matadors' Angelica Claiborne and Ashly Torres and the Gauchos' bench saw yellow cards.
Five field players for the Matadors played the full 90 minutes, which included Cindy Arteaga, Gabriela Robles, Jackie Victorio, Kacie Garrity and Torres. Yoshi Rubalcava played a season-high 61 minutes off the bench.
CSUN played without Brooke Mobeck who missed the first game of her two-year Matador career.
ACCORDING TO COACH CHRISTINE JOHNSON
"It seemed like we were running in quicksand from the time they came out to start warm-up. As a result, we ended up chasing the game for the entire game. I think not having Brooke [Mobeck] had a negative impact on us. We felt it. It was kind of a hole in the midfield. With us being numbers up in the midfield, it still felt like we were missing a player. We're disappointed, I think this was a game that, like any Big West game, we had an opportunity to win and we really dropped the ball on this one."
