PROVO, Utah---CSUN Women's Soccer (1-5) dropped a 5-0 decision at No. 6 BYU on Saturday at South Field. The Cougars connected for four goals in the second half to pull away with Saturday's match.
The Couguars applied pressure on the Matadors' defense throughout the night, racking up 36 shots over the 90 minutes. However, the Matadors kept the Cougars out of the scoring column for nearly the entire first half as the score remained deadlocked for the first 44 minutes.
CSUN withstood a cross deep inside its box in the fifth minute as Ellie Maughan had room at the left post before the CSUN defense knocked away the shot. BYU was frustrated by the Matadors' defensive pressure at the net including freshman goalkeeper Hayden Mauldin who made two first-half saves.Â
The Matadors appeared it might keep BYU scoreless over the first 45 minutes, but the Cougars finally broke through in the 44th minute. On a drive up the field, Allie Fryer dished off a pass to Brecken Mozingo at the top of the box. Mozingo would take a dribble before sending a low shot that deflected off CSUN's Jordan Sprague and into the net for the game's first goal.
After intermission, the Matadors survived two corner kicks and a missed shot from Laveni Vaka before BYU's offense broke through with a pair of goals over a 10-minute span. In the 58th minute, Rachel McCarthy's pass was sent into a crowd in the box where Bella Folino would re-direct the ball into the net for her team's second goal. Minutes later, Sierra Pennock added to the lead by finishing a play following a midfield pass from Olivia Smith.
The lead remained 3-0 until the 83rd minute when Fryer headed in a Mozingo pass for BYU's fourth goal. Less than a minute later, CSUN would commit a costly foul in its own box, resulting in a penalty kick for Mozingo who scored her second goal of the night.
Despite the score, the Matadors continued to battle until the final minutes. Cindy Arteaga would register CSUN's first shot in the 85th minute from deep down the right side of the field. Arteaga sent a low shot that was saved though by Savanna Mason to keep the score at 5-0.

ACCORDING TO COACH CHRISTINE JOHNSON
"I am so proud of this team. We have a really challenging schedule. BYU was not an easy opponent. We are learning and getting better. We want to celebrate the little moments and we'll get back to work on continuing to improve on our vulnerable areas. This is team is so special and I witnessed them band together and fight until the end. I can't say enough of how proud I am of each and everyone of them."
