FORÂ STARTERS
Heading into the final two weeks of pre-Big West play, the CSUN women's volleyball team (1-5, 0-0 Big West) travels to the San Francisco Bay Area for three matches this weekend. The Matadors take on Penn (1-2) in a neutral site match in Moraga on Friday at 11 a.m. before traveling across the Bay to meet the San Francisco Dons Friday at 7 p.m. CSUN concludes the weekend back in Moraga against the Saint Mary's Gaels on Saturday at 1 p.m.
CSUN came up empty in three matches at the Gonzaga Invitational last weekend, falling to Nevada (3-0), Idaho State (3-0) and the host Zags (3-1).

SCOUTING THE TOURNAMENT FIELD
Penn (1-2) picked up its first win of the season last Saturday, closing out the Rose Hill Classic in New York with a 3-1 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. The Quakers opened the tournament - and season - with losses to Niagara (3-1) and Fordham (3-0). Freshman libero Abigail Reid had 19 digs in Penn's win and was named to the all-tournament team while senior Madeline McGregor had 14 kills and five blocks. Series: Friday's match is the first ever meeting between the Matadors and Penn.
San Francisco (6-0) remained unbeaten this season after pulling out a five-set win at Fresno State last Saturday. The Dons also topped Louisiana Tech (3-0) and Seattle (3-2) to win their second straight tournament. Claire Crijns was named the Fresno State Invitational MVP while Shyia Richardson and Lana Kutakhina were named to the All-Tournament Team. Series: Friday's match is the 10th meeting all-time between the Matadors and Dons with USF holding a slim 5-4 series lead. In the most recent meeting between the two teams in 2017, the Dons held off the Matadors to win in five sets.
Saint Mary's (0-4) dropped its fourth straight to open the season after falling in four sets at San Jose State on Friday. The Gaels have played just one home match this season, losing in straight sets to Sacramento State on Aug. 31. Series: Saturday's match is 10th meeting all-time between the Matadors and St. Mary's with the Gaels holding a slim 5-4 series lead. In the most recent meeting between the two teams in 2017, St. Mary's swept the Matadors for their fifth straight win in the series.
NEVAREZ NAMED ALL-TOURNEY AT GONZAGA
Senior Nicole Nevarez followed up Breanna Mitchell by earning all-tournament accolades at Gonzaga last weekend. Nevarez had an impressive three matches in Spokane, posting double figures in kills in all three matches. The senior outside hitter put down a season-high 16 kills while hitting season-high .469 against Idaho State. She narrowly missed her 11th career double-double against the Bengals by adding nine digs. For the week, Nevarez put down 41 kills to go with 22 digs and six aces. Mitchell picked up all-tournament accolades at the season opening tournament at Air Force.
CSUN CAREER NUMBERS
Nevarez, in her fourth season, is closing in on several career milestones in 2022. With a team-high 73 kills this season, Nevarez is now 166 kills away from becoming the 14th player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills. She heads into the week having appeared in 334 career sets while posting 834 career kills on 2,507 career attempts along with 580 career digs, 140 career blocks and 58 career aces. Other Matadors have reached or surpassed milestone numbers so far in 2022. Taylor Orshoff has passed 500 career kills (526), 100 career digs (107) and 100 career blocks (104).
MATADOR QUICK SETS
Junior Lauryn Anderson is off to an impressive start offensively in 2022. Anderson is averaging a career-high 2.33 kills per set on a hitting percentage of .330 through six matches which not only leads the team but ranks ninth in the Big West. Sophomore Carisa Barron is averaging career-highs of 1.38 kills, 5.62 assists and 1.67 digs per set through 21 sets this season ... After picking up her first career kill against Air Force, Magdalena Juric had three kills against Gonzaga ... The Matadors continue to rank second in aces (1.81 per set) and are sixth this week in kills (11.90 per set) and seventh in assists (10.81 per set).
TOURNAMENT TIME
This week's trip to the San Francisco Bay Area marks the third of four weeks on CSUN's non-conference schedule. 32-match regular-season schedule. After meeting teams from the Missouri Valley (Drake), Mountain West (Air Force) Southland (Texas A&M-Commerce) at the Air Force tournament, the Matadors took on another Mountain West team (Nevada) in Spokane last weekend along with teams from the Big Sky Conference (Idaho State) and West Coast Conference (Gonzaga). After taking on a pair of WCC teams this weekend in San Francisco and St. Mary's, CSUN also takes on Penn from the Ivy League. The Matadors conclude the non-conference slate with three matches at the Wildcat Classic in Tucson, Ariz. next weekend as the Matadors face UTEP and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sept. 16 followed by their final non-conference match against host Arizona on Sept. 17. The 20-match Big West Conference schedule opens with a two-match road trip (Sept. 23-24) as CSUN travels to UC Irvine and UC San Diego during the conference-opening weekend.
PRICE NAMED CSUN'SÂ DIRECTOR OF WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
John Price was named Director of Women's Volleyball at CSUN in June of 2022. He will oversee both the indoor and beach volleyball programs. Price returned to the CSUN indoor program in 2021 where he served as an assistant on interim head coach Susie Terrusa's staff. Price previously as an assistant coach on Jeff Stork's women's volleyball coaching staff from 2012-2015. He also served one season as the head coach of the CSUN women's volleyball team in 1993, compiling a record of 12-17 as an NCAA Independent.
Price's CSUN resume also includes 12 seasons as the head coach of the nationally-ranked Matador men's volleyball team (1986-1997) where he amassed an overall record of 194-158 (.551) leading CSUN to a 23-10 record and a berth in the 1993 NCAA Championship match where the Matadors fell to UCLA. Price then moved on to CSU Bakersfield women's volleyball and remains the winningest coach in program history. He posted a career record of 232-169 (.579) over 14 seasons, leading the Roadrunners to a 28-4 overall record in his first season. Price was also at the helm of the CSUB program when the school made the transition from NCAA Division II to Division I status. Price's 2008 squad was the first Roadrunner team in any sport to post a winning record (18-15) in the school's Division I era.
LOOKING AHEAD
After three matches this weekend in the Bay Area, the Matadors will travel to Tucson, Ariz. for the Wildcat Invitational (Sept. 16-17) where CSUN will meet UTEP, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and host Arizona over two days in the desert.
