SANTA BARBARA, Calif.---A penalty kick with less than three minutes to play was the difference in CSUN's 1-0 loss to UC Santa Barbara on Thursday evening at Harder Stadium.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN would outshoot UCSB 5-2 in the first period while generating solid chances at the net over the course of the 45 minutes. The Matadors nearly jumped in front when Izabel Reyes set up Kaylee Gutierrez at the near right post, but Gutierrez's shot was deflected out of the bounds. Reyes also almost hit the net with a header from less than six yards out after a quality pass from Kacie Garrity on the left sideline. UCSB's Dylan Lewis had the Gauchos' best look in the 43rd but her shot from the left side of the box went high.
Out of intermission, the Gauchos picked up a series of shots but only one shot reached the frame with Hayden Mauldin routinely stopping an attempt from Manuri Alwis. UCSB earned perhaps its best look of the night in the 72nd minute when a CSUN defensive miscue allowed Alwis to gain the ball on a wide open drive but Alwis' shot missed just wide left. Minutes later, a UCSB foul just above the box gave CSUN solid field positioning, however, Paige Califf had her shot saved by goalkeeper Maddie Buckley. The game though would be decided on a CSUN foul inside its box with 2:55 left in the contest. Meg Burling found the net on the penalty, giving the Gauchos the 1-0 advantage. CSUN frantically looked for the equalizer down the stretch with Sami Kolin missing high and Kaylee Gutierrez missing wide moments before the final buzzer.

NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH CHRISTINE JOHNSON
"The Big West is so tight right now, and it could have gone either way. Credit to Santa Barbara for posing a lot of threats for us, and they are a quality team. I felt we did really good things today and had good moments. In the second half, it felt like we really kind of dominated. It's just unfortunate it didn't go our way tonight."
