SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Despite junior Carisa Barron's fourth triple-double of the season, the CSUN women's volleyball fell in straight sets at conference-leading UC Santa Barbara in a Big West match Saturday night at The Thunderdome.
CSUN (4-17, 2-8 Big West) fell for the ninth time in 10 road matches this season as the host Gauchos out-hit the Matadors 298 to .102. Barron's 10th career triple-double featured a team-high 13 kills along with 15 assists and a career-high 19 digs. Leah Miller added 10 kills and a pair of blocks while Taylor Hunter and Perri Starkey each chipped in six kills.
SET 1: UCSB 25, CSUN 15
After the two teams played to a 9-9 tie, the Gauchos claimed seven of the next nine points to open up a 16-11 cushion. A UCSB setting error pulled the Matadors within four before the Gauchos scored on six of the next seven points to take their largest lead at 22-13. Barron would connect for a pair of kills down the stretch but CSUN would fall 25-15.
SET 2: UCSB 27, CSUN 25
The Matadors overcame a pair of three-point deficits early in set two before rallying to tie the score at 13-13 following a Miller kill. A UCSB hitting error and a Kaia Kanan ace would give CSUN its first lead at 16-14 before Hunter extended the lead to three (18-15) with a kill. An ensuing 4-1 run by UCSB tied the score at 19-19 and the teams played even until 23-23 when a co-block by Miller and Iye Okolo gave the Matadors set point at 24-23. After a UCSB kill, Barron put down a kill giving CSUN its second set point at 25-24. But three straight points by the Gauchos gave the hosts a comeback 27-25 win.
SET 3: UCSB 25, CSUN 16
After Barron's 12th kill of the night gave CSUN a 10-8 lead in the final set, the Gauchos answered with a 10-0 run that opened up an insurmountable 18-10 lead. A Miller kill brought the Matadors within seven at 23-16 but CSUN would get no closer as UCSB closed out the 3-0 sweep.
