Johnson's Late Goal Results in a 1-1 Tie For the Matadors vs. Sacramento State

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---AJ Johnson's goal in the 81st minute for CSUN brought a hard-fought tie home for the Matadors Saturday night in Big West men's soccer action at Matador Field.

Despite Sacramento State holding a possession advantage, the Matadors continued to press, and the efforts were rewarded. Michael Arrington and Jamar Ricketts were credited with assists as Johnson recorded the equalizer from just in front of the net.

THE TYING GOAL
In his first start, freshman Merrick Cook charted his third save of the night in the 86th minute on a Wehner attempt. Mac Learned returned with his sixth save on a Jorge Solorzano shot on the ensuing CSUN possession. The Matadors threatened in the final minute when CSUN forced a turnover that resulted in a corner kick with 15 seconds remaining. The Hornets swatted away the set piece as time ran out.THE EQUALIZER!

NOTES
- Learned entered the night as the Division I leader in saves and his tally against the Matadors pushed his season total up to 68.
- Cook's start ended Cooper Wenzel's consecutive start streak in goal for CSUN at 34, dating back to the final three matches of the 2021 season.
- CSUN now leads the all-time series against Sacramento State (3-7-3, 0-1-3 Big West) 15-9-3.
