CSUN Drops Home Game to San Diego
12/10/2023 5:46:00 PM | Women's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN Women's Basketball fell to the University of San Diego, 85-61, at Premier America Credit Union Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Matadors outscored the Toreros by 14 points in the fourth quarter but a comeback was not in the cards. Four Matadors scored in the double figures led by Kaitlyn Elsholz with 13 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Toreros opened the game with an 8-2 run before eventually building a double-digit lead on a jumper from Veronica Sheffey with 2:39 left in the first quarter. Amiyah Ferguson made two late free throws to end the first quarter, but CSUN still trailed 24-12 after 10 minutes. A 9-3 run to begin the second period pushed the USD lead to 33-15. The Matadors made just 3-of-13 shots in the second quarter as the lead swelled to 43-19 at intermission.
San Diego would build its lead past 30 points on a Sheffey jumper at the 5:49 mark of the third quarter. CSUN felll behind by as many as 38 points on a basket from Kasey Neubert that beat the third-quarter buzzer.
CSUN though did not quit in the fourth quarter. The Matadors returned with a vengeance to start the period, going on a quick 9-2 run. The lead was chipped away to 27 points when Laney Amundsen hit a jumper with 4:24 left to play. Kayanna Spriggs would bring the Matadors to as close as 78-57 on a free throw with under two minutes to play. CSUN outscored the Toreros in the fourth quarter, 29-15, but the late rally wasn't enough to overcome the big deficit.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH CARLENE MITCHELL
"Sometimes, when you look up at the scoreboard, you just play free and that's what it felt like [in the fourth quarter]. We had a sense of urgency, the ball was moving and extra passes were being made, which didn't happen in the first half."
"The points in the paint in the first half [was large], and they were doing that mainly on offensive rebounds, which continues to be a major issue of ours. When a team has more offensive rebounds as you have total rebounds, you know that's a major concern."
UP NEXT
CSUN continues to play at home with their next match against San Jose State on Monday, Dec. 18, at 12 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
