NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - CSUN Beach Volleyball has announced its 2024 schedule as the Matadors open their 11th season of the sport on Feb. 24 with the first of 31 matches before the 2024 Big West Championship in Long Beach.
"I'm really excited about our schedule this season, said Ari Homayun who opens her second season as CSUN beach head coach in 2024. "We get to play a ton of matches, and we are fortunate to be able to host some new teams here in Northridge. Looking forward to the great competition throughout the season."
After opening the 2024 season in Irvine with a tri-dual against The Master's University and host Concordia, the Matadors will open the home season with a tri-dual on Mar. 1. The CSUN Beach Volleyball Complex will play host to four tri-duals in 2024, the first against The Master's and Westcliff on Mar. 1.
CSUN then heads to Bakersfield for five matches over two days (Mar. 8-9) at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex. The Matadors will take on UNC Wilmington for the first time to open Friday's action before taking on Sacramento State and Cal State Bakersfield. CSUN will meet the Roadrunners and UNC Wilmington again on Saturday.
A mid-month home tri-dual against Concordia Irvine and Cal State LA on Mar. 13 precedes a tough stretch that has CSUN taking on Nebraska, Texas, Arizona State, and Long Beach State in Long Beach over two days (Mar. 15-16).
The Matadors return home to host Colorado Mesa twice on Mar. 20 before CSUN travels to Sacramento for the Big West Challenge which pits all seven Big West teams against each other over three days (Mar. 22-24) in a tournament that will seed for the conference championship in April. CSUN caps the month of March at home against Tulane and Cal State Bakersfield in a tri-dual on Mar. 27.
April opens with the Matadors' final home tri-dual of the season as CSUN welcomes Southeastern Louisiana to the Valley for the first time while Cal State LA fills out the final tri-dual on Apr. 3. Single road matches at UCLA (Apr. 9), Cal State Bakersfield (Apr. 12) and a tri-dual at Loyola Marymount and Arizona (Apr. 20) conclude the regular season.
The Big West Championship, now in its eighth season of existence, is scheduled for April 26-27 at Queens Beach in Long Beach.
CSUN finished the 2023 season with an overall record of 17-16 which matched the program record for single-season wins. The Matadors came up agonizingly short of a program-record 18th win after falling to Cal Poly, 3-2 at the 2023 Big West Beach Volleyball Championship at Queen's Beach in Hawai'i.
CSUN, seeded sixth in the seven-team field, opened the tournament against No. 3-seed UC Davis and dropped a 3-2 decision that came down to extra points in the final pair. The Matadors responded with a 3-2 victory over Sacramento State in an elimination match before falling to Cal Poly, 3-2 in another match that came down the final points in the final pair.
With 17 wins, the Matadors match the program record for season wins with the 2018 and 2022Â CSUN teams that also won 17 times.
