CSUN Splits Beach Tri-Dual at Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif. — CSUN Beach Volleyball earned a split in a tri-dual on Saturday at the LBSU Sand Courts. The Matadors (8-19) opened the day with a 4-1 win over Concordia Irvine, before falling 4-1 to 10th-ranked Long Beach State.
CSUN 4, CONCORDIA IRVINE 1
The Golden Eagles claimed the first point of the opening dual before the Matadors won four straight pairs to defeat Concordia for the second time in three meetings this season.
Concordia picked up its only point on the No. 2 court when Gabrielle Reinking and Olivia Medina swept Tia Mendiola and Zaria Henderson by the score of 21-11, 21-13. CSUN pulled even in the No. 4 pair when Jill Rodig and Ainsley Patrick held off Madi Kelly and Jordan Vander Veen in three sets, 21-15, 19-21, 15-8.
CSUN's No. 5 pair of Haley Coggins and Daysha Halbert won for the 12th time this season, giving the Matadors a 2-1 lead with a 19-21, 21-18, 15-10 victory over Emma Hugeback and Jayda Tupea. CSUN clinched the dual win when Hannah Heflin and Maleya Miles also won in three sets (21-18, 12-21, 19-17) over Kelia Giusta and Ashley Rossi on the No. 1 court. The final point also went to the Matadors as Dylan Hall and Ava Rogers earned their team-leading 14th win, defeating Rosie Cline and Aliyah Moore in straight sets, 21-18, 21-18 in the No. 3 pair.
#10 LONG BEACH STATE 4, CSUN 1
Looking for their first-ever win over the Beach, the Matadors earned a win in the No. 1 pair, but Long Beach State would claim the other four pairs to earn the win.
Rodig and Patrick fell 21-9, 21-13 to Victoria Henkel and Savannah Standage to open the scoring on the No. 4 court. Mendiola and Henderson also came up empty in the No. 2, falling 21-17, 21-10 to Tineke Hinton and Demi Wagdy.
The Beach would clinch the dual win in the No. 5 pair when Kealoha Phillips and Brooke Birch defeated Coggins and Halbert, 21-14, 21-12. The Beach went up 4-0 when their No. 3 pair of Kiara Edwards and Mahala Esser held off Hall and Rogers in three sets, 21-16, 17-21, 15-8.
Heflin and Miles earned their second win of the day and 12th of the season, knocking off Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah, who came into the dual with a 20-9 season record. Heflin and Miles claimed the opening set 21-18 before dropping set two, 21-11. The decisive final set would go to extra points before Heflin and Miles pulled out an 18-16 victory.

CSUN plays its final three dual matches of the regular season next week. The Matadors travel to Los Angeles to meet No. 7 LMU on Friday (Apr. 17) at 1 p.m. before heading to Bakersfield for a tri-dual against the host Roadrunners and Pacific on Saturday, Apr. 18.
