CSUN Tops UTEP to Split Day One of Boise State Classic

CSUN opened the day by dropping a tightly contested dual match to Oregon, falling 3-2.
The Matadors split the opening four flights but couldn't secure the decisive third point despite strong performances on the top and middle courts. CSUN's No. 1 pair of Hannah Heflin and Maleya Miles delivered a key win, defeating Oregon's Liz Rossi and Bella Gamache, 21-19, 20-22, 15-13 to put the Matadors on the board. Dylan Hall and Ava Rogers added another point, the pair's 11th win of the season, defeating Daley McClellan and Elsa Snipes at No. 3, 21-19, 17-21, 15-10.
Oregon, however, claimed the remaining three flights, all in three sets, to clinch the dual. Tia Mendiola and Zaria Henderson fell in their No. 2 match-up against AJ Slojkowski and Gwen Fife (21-18, 18-21, 15-11), while Jill Rodig and Ainsley Patrick were defeated by Hanna Bjornson and Sofia Taylor (21-19, 18-21, 15-11) at No. 4. In the decisive result, Haley Coggins and Daysha Halbert came up short against Natasha George and Landree Coats (20-22, 21-16, 15-10), sealing the Ducks' 3-2 win.Â
CSUN 3, UTEP 2
The Matadors rebounded with a 3-2 victory over UTEP in the afternoon dual. CSUN secured wins in three of the five flights, getting contributions throughout the lineup to edge the Miners in a tightly contested dual.
UTEP picked up the first point of the dual as Krista Paegle and Paulina Acuna defeated Mendiola and Henderson, 21-11, 21-11 on the No. 2 court. CSUN pulled even when Rodig and Patrick defeated Emma Schubert and Evelina Krieva by the score of 21-19, 22-20 in the No. 4 pair.
Heflin and Miles picked up their 10th win of the season with a 21-13, 21-19 win over UTEP's Mila Popovic and Kennedy Llewellyn on the No. 1 court, Hall and Rogers then clinched the dual with their seventh straight, topping Averie Threet and Iana Loera, 21-13, 21-14 at No. 3. Adriana Oporto and Alexa Monreal completed the scoring, earning a 21-15, 21-19 victory over Coggins and Halbert in the No. 5 pair.
HEAD COACH JEFF HALL SAID
"So close to beating Oregon, but I'll take a split day and hope for two wins tomorrow. The Girls are grinding. This was maybe the coldest weather anyone has ever played in."

CSUN has two more dual matches on Saturday, taking on Santa Clara at 9:30 a.m. and No. 20 Boise State at 3:30 p.m.
