COACH THEO EDWARDS SAID
"It was unfortunate that we weren't at full strength tonight but Vanguard played incredibly well. I felt like we weren't mentally prepared to play and we really came out flat tonight. We just didn't bring the same intensity that we brought last week but we'll regroup and get ready for a tough Stanford team on Friday."
SET 1
After a Malcolm King kill tied the score at 1-1 in the opening set, the visitors scored four straight points and would never trail. A Bertozzi kill pulled CSUN within two at 6-4 but the Lions would answer with a 3-1 run to push the lead back to four at 9-5. The Matadors then rallied behind a 6-2 run to trim the deficit to 12-11 following an Anderson hitting error. But Vanguard would outscore the Matadors 7-2 over the next nine points to open up its largest lead at 19-13. Still down six at 20-14, CSUN put together a late 8-3 run to close to within one at 23-22 but a pair of Lion kills sent the visitors to the 25-22 win.Â
SET 2
With the score tied at 5-5 in the second set, CSUN used a Bertozzi kill, a Vanguard hitting error and a Krenik solo block to open up a three-point cushion at 8-5. The Matadors would maintain at least a one-point lead until the Lions used consecutive kills to re-take the lead 14-13. Vanguard would extend its lead to two before CSUN rallied back to within 20-19 after a Lions hitting error. But a Matador service error on the ensuing point would propel the visitors on a 4-0 run that set up set point at 24-19. CSUN saved one set point before Vanguard wrapped up a 25-20 win with a kill on set point.Â
SET 3
CSUN held a slim 8-7 lead in the final set when Vanguard rolled off nine straight points to open up a 16-8 advantage that the Matadors would not recover from. Still trailing by eight at 20-12, another Hobus kill and a Donovan Constable ace cut the margin to six but CSUN would get no closer as the visitors closed out a 25-17 win.
