SEASIDE, Calif.---No. 25 CSUN Water Polo knocked off Cal State Monterey Bay 10-5 for its third-straight victory on Friday at CSUMB Aquatic Center. Dorottya Telek netted five goals while Tatitana Smeltzer added two goals in the wire-to-wire victory. Goalkeeper Meghan Lopez returned to the lineup and finished with eight saves.
Telek opened up the scoring on the day with a goal via a penalty shot. CSUN's first three goals of the match came from Telek before the Otters scored on a power play to make it a 3-1 game after eight minutes. The Matadors took advantage of another penalty shot opportunity with Smeltzer finding the net this time to extend the lead back to three. Only two total goals were scored in the second period as Gabri Vincze cut the lead to 4-2 for Cal State Monterey Bay.
Still a tight game near the six-minute mark of the third period, CSUN picked up back-to-back-to-back goals from Valeria Martinez, Telek and Helena Sandhagen to extend to a 7-2 lead. The Otters took advantage of a 6-on-5 possession to crack the scoring column late in the third period to pull to within 7-3 after 24 minutes.
Telek notched her fifth goal of the match one minute into the fourth period before Shelby Hovanesian stretched the lead to the biggest of the day at 9-3. Smeltzer would close the scoring for CSUN in the match with 1:59 left to play.
GAME NOTES
Dorottya Telek and Helena Sandhagen had three steals apiece in the victory while Anna Pal and Shelby Hovanesian each picked up two assists. Meghan Lopez, who missed the Matadors' two matches last week, finished with two steals to go with her eight saves in front of the cage.Â
Telek has now scored 114 career goals with the Matadors as she pushed her season total to 37.
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"Six-hour bus rides and playing games on the same day can be a challenge but this group rose to the occasion. Solid team win today and a nice way to kick off five road games in three days."
UP NEXT
