2/18/2023 7:00:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
SANTA CLARA, Calif.---No. 25 CSUN Water Polo (7-4) earned a split on the first day of the Bronco Invitational, hosted by Santa Clara, on Saturday at Sullivan Aquatic Center. CSUN knocked off Cal State East Bay 10-5 in the morning match before falling to No. 19 San Jose State 6-5. Dorottya Telek registered eight combined goals on the day while Meghan Lopez tallied 22 total saves between the two contests.
GAME 1 RECAP
The Matadors trailed until the 4:23 mark of the first period when a goal from Nicole Thomas evened the match at 1-1. CSUN's defense would be the story for most of the match as the Matadors held the Pioneers without a goal for over 16 minutes. After Shelby Hovanesian gave CSUN a 2-1 lead late in the first period, the Matadors outscored the Pioneers 3-0 in the second period with each goal coming from Telek.
Thomas scored another to extend the Matadors' lead to 6-1 before the Pioneers ended the dry spell with back-to-back tallies from Rachel Heredia. Anna Pal though ended the period with another CSUN goal to extend the lead to 7-3 after 24 minutes.
Telek added to her scoring tally with two fourth-period goals while Helena Sandhagen added another to help seal a CSUN win.
Pal had three assists to go with four field blocks. Hovanesian recorded five steals.
GAME 2 RECAP
It would be a defensive struggle in the Matadors' matchup with San Jose State. The Spartans struck first on a powerplay at the 5:27 mark of the first period. CSUN would look up at a 1-0 deficit until the final minute of the quarter when Telek hit the equalizer. However, Lion Ben David gave the Spartans the lead right back on the next possession for a San Jose State 2-1 lead after eight minutes.
The second quarter saw only one goal hit the netting as Telek squared the match once more at the 5:29 mark of the period. CSUN withstood four power plays in the period with the score staying at 2-2 at halftime.
Lucy Miszeweski gave the Spartans the lead once more early in the third period but the Matadors responded with a goal from Hovanesian on a power play then another tally from Telek that put CSUN in front for the first time. The teams would trade goals as Sandhagen scored for CSUN to put the Matadors ahead 5-4 heading to the final period.
A costly CSUN penalty allowed San Jose State to even the match with 6:41 left to play. Moments later, Miszeweski put the Spartans back in front at the five-minute mark. CSUN would draw four exclusions on San Jose State down the stretch of the game but could not find the equalizer. San Jose State managed the clock in the closing moments to pick up the win.
Valeria Martinez had four steals along with an assist while Telek added two field blocks and four drawn exclusions to her stat line.
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"Another solid effort on the defensive end against CSU East Bay. We are showing steady improvement which is nice to see early in the season.
Today was a big step in the season in many ways. Holding a San Jose State team to six goals 90 percent of the time will equate to a victory. We were able to execute our game plan and capitalized on some opportunities early in the game, the ball just didn't bounce our way in the final minute. Back to the grind tomorrow with two more big road games."

CSUN wraps up the weekend with two more matches at the Bronco Invitational on Sunday. The Matadors take on Austin College at 9:40 a.m. before facing Marist at 1:10 p.m. Live stats will be available for both matches.
