Despite Tu'ua's Career High Matadors Fall to UCSD

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Despite a career-high 17 points from CSUN's Anaiyah Tu'ua, UC San Diego defeated the Matadors 57-46 in Big West women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
FIRST HALF
CSUN jumped to a quick 4-0 lead, with the Tritons returning to tie the score at six. The Matadors went up 10-9 on a Laney Amundsen jumper with just under two minutes to play in the first quarter. Bridget Mullings keyed a 7-0 UCSD run to end the quarter with back-to-back field goals as the Tritons led by six at the end of the first. UC San Diego jumped to a 23-12 lead midway through the second. Michelle Duchemin and Tu'ua connected on consecutive three-pointers to bring the Matadors to within five. The Tritons held CSUN scoreless over the final 4:42 of the frame. UCSD scored the final nine points of the first half to take a 32-18 lead into halftime.
SECOND HALF
The Tritons opened the third quarter on a 7-3 spurt that earned UC San Diego its largest lead, 39-21, at the 6:40 mark. Tu'ua scored nine points over the next 2+ minutes to cut the lead to 39-30. Duchemin made four in a row for a 43-34 score a short time later. Tu'ua's three-pointer with 59 seconds remaining reduced the UCSD advantage to eight. Izzy Forsyth's three-pointer at the third quarter horn sent the Tritons into the final 10 minutes up 48-37. CSUN held UC San Diego to only two field goals in the fourth quarter (in 10 attempts), but the Matadors couldn't capitalize as CSUN went 4-of-12 from the field. The Tritons were 5-of-6 from the free throw line as both teams only scored nine points in the final 10 minutes for the final 57-46 score.

Tu'ua was 5-of-10 from the field and 3-of-5 from three-point range. She made all four of CSUN's free throw attempts. (CSUN was 4-of-7 for the game from the free throw line). Tu'ua added five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Duchemin scored 11 for the Matadors. Forsyth led the Tritons with 15 points. Sydney Brown scored 12 and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
UC San Diego (12-13, 9-6 Big West) was 19-of-51 from the field (37.3%), and CSUN went 18-of-49 (36.7%) from the floor. The Tritons outrebounded the Matadors 37-30, 13-8 on the offensive glass. UCSD went 12-of-17 from the free throw line, with Forsyth going 7-of-8. Both teams committed 15 turnovers, with the Matadors making 10 steals.
