#25 CSUN Water Polo Plays Five-Match Weekend Starting Friday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 25 CSUN Water Polo plays a busy five-match stretch over three days in Northern California this weekend. The Matadors visit Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. before heading to Santa Clara to take on four opponents. CSUN takes on Cal State East Bay on Saturday morning at 10:10 a.m. then faces San Jose State later that day at 2:50 p.m. The weekend wraps up on Sunday when CSUN meets Austin College at 9:40 a.m. and Marist at 1:10 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
CSUN improved to 5-3 on the season with a pair of wins at Cal Lutheran this past Saturday. The Matadors defeated the host Regals 13-9, pulling away down the stretch of the fourth period. Later on Saturday, CSUN knocked Concordia by a 13-9 margin.
Against Cal Lutheran, Dorottya Telek would make more Matador history by scoring seven goals for the second time in as many weeks, once again tying a school record for goals. Anna Pal and Helena Sandhagen each recorded a hat trick in a wire-to-wire win over Concordia.
CSUN played without starting goalkeeper Meghan Lopez and had to turn to three field players to manage the cage. Tatiana Smeltzer and Kelsey Meyers combined to post three saves versus Cal Lutheran while Jessica Matkovich played the full 32 minutes against Concordia and posted four saves.
TELEK EARNS BIG WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore center Dorottya Telek received her second career Big West player of the Week nod this past Wednesday. She is the first Matador to receive the conference's weekly honor this season. Telek had eight goals in the Matadors' two wins at Cal Lutheran last Saturday. After scoring seven goals in the win over Cal Lutheran, Telek became the first CSUN player in the school's water polo history to record seven goals in a match on two separate occasions.
MATADOR LEADERS
Dorottya Telek enters play this week with a Big West-leading 32 goals to go with eight steals and three field blocks. Anna Pal is also in double digits in goals with 11 to go with a team-best 10 assists and 11 steals. The trio of Helena Sandhagen, Shelby Hovanesian and Tatum Scarry have six goals apiece. In front of the cage, Meghan Lopez has recorded 52 saves with a 10.86 goals-against-average.
SERIES HISTORY
CSUN owns a 7-0 record over Cal State Monterey Bay and a 10-0 record against Cal State East Bay in its history. San Jose State leads CSUN 12-2 in the all-time head-to-head matchup while the Matadors have won the only meeting with Austin College in 2019. Finally, the Matadors have won seven of nine matches with Marist in water polo.
A LOOK AT CSUN'S OPPONENTS
Cal State Monterey Bay is 2-8 on the season with early season wins over Santa Clara (11-10) and Ottawa (11-8). Shelby Fortune leads the team with 13 goals on the season to go with four assists while Megan Taylor already has 111 saves on the year. Last season, the Otters finished with a 4-17 record.
Cal State East Bay comes in with a 4-3 record and has won two in a row over Cal State Monterey Bay (13-5) and La Verne (14-11). Luna Sarmiento has netted a team-high 14 goals. Goalkeeper Daniela Passoni has recorded 67 saves in 2023. A season ago, the Pioneers posted a 15-15 record.
No. 19 San Jose State have a 4-9 record this season with recent wins over California Baptist (11-7) and Cal State Monterey Bay (16-1). Olga Descalzi, the team's top returning scorer, had 40 goals in 2022. Last season, the Spartans finished with an 11-16 record.
Ranked No. 8 in this week's Division III poll, Austin College is 0-4 thus far in 2023. Lauren Olivier earned All-CWPA honors in 2022, scoring double digits in goals. Last season, the 'Roos won their second consecutive CWPA Division III championship and finished with a 14-8 record.
No. 24 Marist is 7-4 this season with recent wins over Austin College (19-2) and Bucknell (18-11). Viktoria Orlova scored 62 goals last season for the Red Foxes who posted a 25-14 overall record.
