#24 CSUN to Compete in Competitive Triton Invite This Week

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 24 CSUN Water Polo (2-0) sets its sights on the highly-competitive Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego in La Jolla this weekend. The Matadors open the invite taking on No. 3 UCLA on Friday with a start time set for noon. CSUN takes on either No. 12 UC Davis or No. 18 UC San Diego in the first of two games set for Saturday while the event will close with one more Matador match on Sunday.
CSUN will compete at the Triton Invitational for 17th time in team history this season. At last year's event, the Matadors went 2-2, posting wins over nationally-ranked Marist and San Diego State.
The 2023 Triton Invitational features 14 teams including 13 nationally-ranked squads. In addition, six of those teams were ranked in the top-10 in this week's national poll (#2 USC, #3 UCLA, #5 Hawai'i, #7 Long Beach State, #8 Fresno State and #9 UC Irvine). CSUN is one of seven teams representing The Big West at this year's event.
The Matadors opened the 2023 season on Jan. 21 with a pair of wins at Long Beach State's Beach Invite. CSUN defeated La Verne 17-5 before downing Biola 9-8 to close the event. Dorottya Telek led the way offensively, scoring 11 combined goals in the two matches to go with four steals. Anna Pal added four goals and two assists while Jessica Matkovich and Beata Hitterer had two goals apiece. In net, Meghan Lopez had 19 saves with a 6.00 GAA in the two matches.
After netting 11 goals on opening day, Telek is closing in on 100 career goals with the Matadors. The sophomore center has hit the net 88 times in just 28 matches, averaging 3.14 goals per game. Last season, Telek led the Big West in goals with 77 tallies and earned All-Big West First Team honors.Â
SERIES HISTORY
UCLA has won all 14 meetings with CSUN in women's water polo. The teams last met on Jan. 17, 2020, at the UCSB Winter Invite with the Bruins coming out on top, 16-6. Nine of the 14 all-time matches between the two teams have been played at a neutral site.
SCOUTING UCLA
The Bruins are a perfect 6-0 on the season and come in winners of three-straight matches over Big West teams in UC Davis (21-7), UC Santa Barbara (11-6) and UC San Diego (16-2). UCLA has six returning All-Americans from last season with graduate center Ava Johnson earning second team honors in 2022 after recording 38 points. An All-American honorable mention, Val Ayala is the team's top returning point scorer from last season when she had 57 points to go with 34 goals.Â
A season ago, UCLA went 24-6 and advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Women's Water Polo Championship.
