
#24 CSUN Drops Triton Invite Opener to #3 UCLA

LA JOLLA, Calif.---No. 24 CSUN Water Polo (2-1) dropped its opener at the Triton Invitational to No. 3 UCLA by a 21-3 final on Friday afternoon at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
The Bruins got off to a fast start, scoring twice in the first two-plus minutes for a quick 2-0 lead. The Matadors were able to draw a pair of exclusions in the opening period but could not take advantage. Meanwhile, UCLA stretched its lead to 4-0 on goals from Val Ayala and Nicole Struss.
CSUN would not get into the scoring column until the opening minute of the second period when Anna Pal hit an even strength goal. Less than a minute later, Tatum Scarry scored on a power play to bring the Matadors to within 4-2 with 6:41 on the clock. The Bruins though took control near the midway point of the second quarter. After a Katrina Drake goal, Molly Renner and Hannah Palmer hit goals within a 34-second span. Sienna Green later capped a 5-0 UCLA run to close the second period for a 9-2 lead.
UCLA controlled the third period, outscoring the Matadors 5-0 as the lead grew to 14-2. CSUN was held off the scoreboard until the 3:35 mark of the fourth period when Tatiana Smeltzer made it an 18-3 game. The Bruins though closed the match with three consecutive goals, all of which on even strength possessions, for a 21-3 victory.
GAME NOTES
Meghan Lopez played the first three quarters in goal, recording two saves. Anna Pal scored her fifth goal of the season and has recorded at least one goal in all three CSUN matches this season. Both Tatum Scarry and Tatiana Smeltzer scored their second goal of the season.

The Matadors continue play at the Triton Invite on Saturday with two matches. CSUN opens the day taking on No. 12 UC Davis at 8:30 a.m. The Matadors' second opponent will be determined on Saturday morning.
