NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Junior Kyle Hobus put down a match-high 15 kills but the 12th-ranked CSUN Matadors had their season-long, eight-match winning streak snapped as visiting UC San Diego swept CSUN in a Big West match Thursday night at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
The visiting Tritons snap a six-match losing streak as they improve to 7-12 overall and 1-4 in the Big West. The Matadors, coming off a 13-day break from match action, slip to 12-6 overall and 1-1 in the Big West.
KEY STATISTICS
• Hobus led all hitters with 15 kills, hitting .355 on 31 swings to go with six digs and two blocks.
• Griffin Walters also reached double figures with 10 kills but hit just .077 on 26 attacks while Jano Tello chipped in seven kills on 14 errorless swings (.500). Tello also added a pair of blocks and had CSUN's only ace in the match.Â
• Sophomore setter Donovan Constable posted 36 assists and four digs while Taylan Cook led the Matadors with eight digs.
• Although the Matadors had a 39-33 advantage in kills, UCSD out-blocked CSUN (10.5-5.5) while also posted a 31-24 advantage in digs and a 3-1 edge in aces.
• Ryan Ka had 13 kills (.250) to lead the Tritons who wound up hitting .263 to CSUN's .211.
COACH THEO EDWARDS SAID
"I think having a week off doesn't always fit, especially when you're playing well. There are times when you're banged up and have injuries and that break is exactly what you need. I thought we came out a little flat and lacked some urgency in the first set but got it back in the second set. The problem was we dug ourselves too big of a hole and struggled to get out of it. Give UCSD credit, they played well and really controlled the service line and we struggled to steal the momentum. I didn't feel like we played our worst match but we definitely didn't play our best either."
SET 1
CSUN claimed the opening point of the match on a Walters kill and would lead by two at 5-3 following a Tello kill. A 3-0 run by the Tritons would erase the lead and put UCSD up 6-5 when the Matadors countered with a 3-0 run of their own to re-take the lead 8-6. CSUN maintained a two-point edge at 10-8 and again at 11-9 when the Tritons scored five unanswered to open up a 14-11 advantage. The Matadors would never regain the lead as the visitors carried a 15-12 lead into the media timeout before extending the margin to four at 20-16. Ka's third kill of the set gave UCSD its largest lead at 22-17 before the Tritons would settle on a 25-21 win in the opening set.
SET 2
After neither team hit particularly well in the opening set, UCSD would hit .321 in set two compared to .276 for the Matadors. CSUN again led early on (2-0) before the Tritons scored four straight to take the lead for good. The Matadors would tie the score at 5-5 and 6-6 before a Ka kill and a UCSD block opened up a two-point lead. Leading by three at 13-10, the visitors outscored CSUN 4-2 over the next six points to extend the lead to 17-12. Hobus then began to heat up, connecting for three kills in a 4-0 Matador run that cut the lead to one at 17-16. CSUN would tie the score on three occasions, the last at 21-21, when a Matador service error and a UCSD kill put the Tritons in front 23-21. A service error out of a CSUN timeout trimmed the deficit to 23-22 but UCSD would score the final two points in a 25-22 win.
SET 3
The Tritons carried the momentum into the final set, outscoring the Matadors 10-4 to open the set. UCSD led by as many as eight (16-8) when CSUN engineered a 5-1 run to pull within four at 17-13. But two straight Matador miscues pushed the lead back to two (19-13) and CSUN would not get within four the rest of the set as UCSD closed out a 25-20 win. Â
