Hawai'i Takes Opener at CSUN

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i defeated CSUN 12-3 in the home opener for the Matadors Friday afternoon.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
The Rainbow Wahine jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the top of the first. Hawai'i sent 14 batters to the plate. Haley Johnson hit a grand slam home run and added an RBI single to drive in half of the UH runs. The Rainbow Wahine added a run in the top of the fourth.
The Matadors loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth. Hawai'i starter Brianna Lopez walked Kylie Galindo for the first CSUN run. Lopez walked Shaylan Whatman for the second run and was relieved by Millie Fidge. Fidge got the first out before she walked pinch-hitter Maddie Padilla for the third CSUN run. Fidge induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. Hawai'i scored for the final time in the top of the fifth.
Johnson led the Rainbow Wahine by going 3-for-4. She reached base in each of her four plate appearances. Maya Nakamura drove in three runs with a double in the first inning. After that, she went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Mikayla Carman posted two of the five CSUN hits.
UP NEXT
CSUN (10-14, 2-2 Big West) and Hawai'i (20-10, 3-1 Big West) conclude the series Saturday with a doubleheader. ESPN+ will stream the games beginning at 1 p.m.
