CSUN Sweeps Sacramento State, Finishes 1-2 on Final Day in San Luis Obispo

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The CSUN beach volleyball team (10-11) picked up a sweep over Sacramento State as the Matadors finished 1-2 on the final day of the Bigger West Invitational Sunday at Cal Poly's Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex.

UC DAVIS 4, CSUNÂ 1
The Matadors opened the day looking to snap a three-match skid against the Aggies but came out on the short end of a 4-1 final. UCD's Mia Olen and Megan Luly opened the scoring with a 21-18, 21-15 win over Victoria Rogers and Mac McCarthy in the No. 3 pair. The Aggie went ahead 2-0 when Colleen McGuire and Kylie Miller defeated Emily Sparks and Mikaela Maughan, 21-15, 21-15 in the No. 2 pair. Sydeny Rau-Kim and Alicia Letvin then clinched the dual win with a straight-set win (21-15, 21-16) over Abbey Sweeting and Gabriela Griego.
The Matadors got on the board in the No. 1 pair as Lauren Eknoian and Tasha Mae swept Tabitha Mitchell and Finley Rollins, 23-21, 21-15 before Morgan Coolbaugh and Sam Lazenby held off Abigail Alvarez and Seyvion Waggoner in three sets after the CSUN pair dominated the opening set 21-6. The Aggies would claim the final two sets (21-15, 15-12) to earn the 4-1 team win.Â

CSUNÂ 5, SACRAMENTO STATE 0
The Matadors went into their middle dual having beaten the Hornets five consecutive times and would make it six straight with the 5-0 win. Sweeting and Griego got CSUN off to a good start in the No. 5 pair, picking up their team-leading 12th win of the season after sweeping Caty Cordano and Hailey Plugge, 21-11, 21-15. McCarthy then teamed up with Waggoner in the No. 4 pair and CSUN claimed a 21-10, 21-14 win over Tiya Kamba-Griffin and Carrie Crom. Sparks and Maughan would clinch CSUN's first win of the weekend and its 10th of the season with a 21-15, 21-19 victory over Ellie Tisko and Caitlin Volkmann in the No. 2 pair.
Eknoian and Mae made it two straight wins on Sunday with a 21-17, 21-17 win over Bridgette Smith and Kalani Hayes in the No. 1 pair before Rogers and Layla Cederlind teamed up for a win in the No. 3 pair, topping Greta Davis and Ashlynn Archer in three sets (21-13, 12-21, 16-14) to complete the CSUN sweep.

CAL POLYÂ 4, CSUNÂ 1
The Matadors would cap the day against the host Mustangs and dropped a 4-1 decision as Cal Poly won for the 10th straight time in the series. Rogers and Cederlind went up against Jayelin Lombard and Piper Naess in the No. 3 pair with Cal Poly taking a 21-12, 21-12 win. The Mustangs made it 2-0 when the No. 1 pair went final as Piper Ferch and Izzy Martinez swept Eknoian and Mae, 21-10, 21-15. Delaney Peranich and Brooke Golik would clinch the win for Cal Poly with a 21-19, 21-13 win over Sparks and Maughan in the No. 2 pair.
The Mustangs led 4-0 when Emma Zuffelato and Kalee Graff swept Sweeting and Griego in the No. 5 pair, 21-15, 21-17 before McCarthy and Waggoner earned CSUN's only win of the dual by picking up a three-set win over Mariina Warren and Julia Soeller in the 4's, 21-12, 22-24, 15-11.

"It was good to get one today. This next week of practice is going to be huge for us. We need to get a lot better in a month here, so back to drawing board we go."

The Matadors return home to host Saint Katherine and San Francisco in a tri-dual on Friday (Mar. 31) at the CSUN Beach Volleyball Complex. The Matadors then finish the week in Irvine on Saturday, taking on Saint Katherine and Concordia at Great Park.
