CSUN Outslugs San Diego for 12-10 Win

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (14-6) racked up 16 hits and held on late for a 12-10 win over San Diego on Tuesday afternoon at Matador Field. Mason Le and Shunsuke Sakaino each went 3-for-5 in the win while Kevin Fitzer finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a home run. Ryan Wentz picked up his first win of the season on the mound, working five innings in relief and allowing two unearned runs.
The Toreros struck first in the opening inning, plating a pair of runs on a one-out single from Austin Smith. CSUN though quickly answered back in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a pair of USD errors to start the inning.
The Matadors' first run came via a Le liner to first base that was misplayed, resulting in Kevin Fitzer scoring from second base. After Joey Kramer singled, Ben Griffin evened the game with an RBI single to center field. Elijah Cook would cap off the inning with an RBI single to right field that put the Matadors on top 3-2.
Wentz retired the Toreros in order in the top of the second but committed a costly throwing error early in the third that led to USD taking a 4-3 lead. Once again the lead was short lived as the Matadors pushed the tying run across in the bottom of the third on a two-out single from Le.
Over the middle innings, the Matadors scored seven times to extend to a seven-run lead.
In the fourth, Sakaino kept the inning alive with a two-out single. After Brandon Leon drew a walk, Graysen Tarlow delivered a two-run double to center field to put the Matadors back on top. Fitzer closed a four-run inning with a two-run homer to left field.
CSUN produced three-straight singles to start the bottom of the fifth with Griffin picking up an RBI single. The Matadors would take an 11-4 lead later the frame on a Leon fielder's choice that prompted a throwing error and resulted in two runs scoring.
After a rocky third inning, Wentz settled down on the mound and limited the Toreros to a hit over the middle innings while picking up three strikeouts over that span.
However, the Toreros rallied in the late innings beginning in the seventh when USD scored twice. It appeared USD might score a third in the inning after Jack Gurevitch singled with a runner at second base, but Andrew Sojka threw out Smith at home plate for the final out of the inning.
The Matadors committed another error in the eighth inning, opening the door for the Toreros to score twice more. After CSUN picked up an insurance run on a Nathan Barraza RBI hit in the eighth, the Toreros pulled to within 12-10 on a two-run homer from Smith.
CSUN's closer Joshua Romero would rebound on the mound after the Smith homer to retire three of the next four batters to secure the win.
GAME NOTES
Five different Matadors had multiple-hit games while three drove in two runs apiece. Nine players also had at least one hit and eight scored at least once in the game. Graysen Tarlow extended his on-base streak to 19 games and registered his fifth multiple-RBI game of the season. Ali Camarillo, who went 1-for-5, stretched his hit streak to eight games.
CSUN scored seven of its 12 runs with two outs in the game.

"This was the total antithesis of what we're trying to do. We're trying to play fundamental baseball. We're not asking the guys to be amazing. We just want them to put it in play, play catch and throw strikes. We gave up 20 free 90 feet's. Today was probably the worst day of the year [with that]. The one thing we did do well was we swung the bats and ran the bases. We were fundamental there."
