CSUB Defeats CSUN in First Round of The Big West Tournament

HENDERSON, Nev.—For the second consecutive season, CSU Bakersfield, the ninth seed, upset CSUN, the eighth seed, 55-52, in the first round of the Hercules Tires Big West Women's Basketball Championship, presented by The Hawaiian Islands.
FIRST HALF
In a rematch of the first game inside the Dollar Loan Center, a 6-0 CSUN spurt put the Matadors ahead 9-3 at the first quarter media timeout. Ana Carolina De Jesus keyed the action with back-to-back jumpers.
The Matadors pushed the lead to 10-3 before a Sophia Tougas three-pointer broke a 3+ minute CSUB scoring drought with a little over three minutes remaining. However, the Roadrunners outscored the Matadors 9-4 over the final three minutes as CSUN led 14-12 after 10 minutes.
CSUB grabbed its first advantage at 17-16 in the second period on a Hennie van Schaik bucket. Tess Amundsen's basket at the 3:27 mark of the second marked her 1000th career point. There were six lead changes in 10 minutes, with CSUN taking a 30-29 edge into halftime after a De Jesus' put-back layup in the final five seconds.
SECOND HALF
The Matadors came back out and tallied the first six points of the third to stretch their run to 10-0 around the interval. A made jumper by Anaiyah Tu'ua made it 38-31 and forced a 'Runner timeout with 6:37 to go.
The Matadors led 40-34 at the media timeout midway through the stanza. Kayanna Spriggs' free throws with 30 seconds remaining broke a 5:30 scoring drought for the Matadors. CSUN led 42-38 at the end of 30 minutes.
The teams traded baskets to begin the fourth quarter. The teams went cold for the next 2+ minutes until van schaik's free throws made it 44-42 at 6:44. Fourie's basket came on the ensuing Matadors' possession for a four-point advantage. CSUN got a stop, resulting in an Amundsen three-pointer. She was fouled on the play but missed the opportunity to make it a four-point play.
Down 49-42, Tougas responded with a long jumper for CSUB. The score would remain 49-44 into a CSUN timeout at the 4:21 mark. The Roadrunners reduced the lead to three on a Taylor Caldwell jumper a little over two minutes later. A CSUN turnover led to Taylor Caldwell being fouled on a drive. She made 1-of-2 free throws; however, the Roadrunners got the offensive rebound. Van Schaik missed a jumper, resulting in a held ball. CSUN had the possession and received the possession. However, CSUN failed to convert as Caldwell was fouled coming down the court. She missed the first free throw but made the second to create a 49-48 score.
Amundsen was called for a travel with 46.7 seconds remaining. The Roadrunners called timeout to set up Tougas' go-ahead basket. CSUN called a timeout to advance. CSUN fed De Jesus in the block, but Grace Hunter her layup attempt. There was a held ball that was in favor of the Roadrunners. With the possession, CSUB called a timeout at 24.9. The 'Runners ran six seconds off the clock before Hunter was fouled. She made the first free throw attempt but missed the second, where van Schaik grabbed the rebound and put it back for a 53-49 score. The Matadors called a timeout to advance the ball to half-court. CSUN missed again; van Schaik nabbed the rebound and was fouled. She made two free throws. Jordyn Jackson's three-pointer at the buzzer made it the final. 55-52.

CSU Bakersfield (7-22) was led by van Schaik, who scored a game-high 19 points. She added seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Tougas added 17 points, going 3-for-5 from three-point territory. Caldwell contributed 16 points, nine boards, and five assists. No other Roadrunner made a field goal. Amundsen led CSUN (7-24) with 14 points. Amundsen charted three rebounds. Two assists. De Jesus reset her season highs as she posted her first double-double. The 6-3 center scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Matadors outshot the Roadrunners 40% (20-50)-37% (20-54). CSUB outrebounded CSUN 36-35, 10-6 on the offensive glass. The Matadors made five steals and forced 13 turnovers which were turned into 13 points. The 'Runners made five six steals to force 14 turnovers, scoring 10 points.

Amundsen, who began playing at Boise State in 2017, ended her collegiate career with 1,005 points, 757 of which were scored at CSUN….Wednesday marked the fourth time in a calendar year that CSUN and CSUB played…The 2022 first-round matchup was also a close one won by CSUB, 63-62, as Vanessa Austin grabbed an offensive rebound and got the put-back to go with 0.8 ticks left in overtime…this season's meetings were both in February, with the Matadors taking each by single digits, the latter again going to overtime in Bakersfield on February 23.
