NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Sophomore Dorottya Telek broke CSUN's single-season scoring record as the 24th-ranked Matadors (15-5) defeated Villanova 12-9 on Tuesday at Matador Pool. Telek scored four goals in the match including her record-breaking 81st goal late in the contest. Anna Pal had a hat trick as well for CSUN while Meghan Lopez collected 17 saves in front of the cage.
Telek would open the scoring on the afternoon with a penalty shot goal in the opening minute of play. The Matadors' defense was strong in the first period, holding the Wildcats off the scoreboard while withstanding four power plays. Meanwhile, CSUN picked up goals from Shelby Hovanesian, Carly Bockstahler and Jessica Matkovich to open a 4-0 lead after eight minutes of play.
In the second period, Pal gave the Matadors a 5-0 advantage with her first goal of the afternoon. Villanova finally cracked the scoring column at the 5:20 mark of the second period but CSUN answered right back with another tally from Telek. The lead grew further later in the period on goals from Pal and Telek for an 8-1 advantage. In the final minute of the half, Pal completed the hat trick as CSUN took a 9-2 lead into the second half.
A Hovanesian goal gave the Matadors their biggest lead of the game at 10-2 with six minutes to play in the third quarter. Villanova though began to chip away at the lead, scoring twice in the third and the first two tallies of the fourth period to pull to within 10-6.
CSUN would turn to its leading scorer as Telek broke the Matadors' single-season scoring record at the 5:19 mark of the fourth period to extend the lead to five goals. While Villanova would get three goals in the final 2:25 it would not be enough to catch the Matadors.
GAME NOTES
Telek's 81st goal of the season broke Whitney Delgado's previous mark of 80 set during the 2010 season. On the season, Telek is averaging 4.01 goals per game.
Shelby Hovanesian and Carly Bockstahler had two goals apiece in the match. Hovanesian also had three assists while Valeria Martinez added two helpers.
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"Beating a skilled Villanova team in our home opener after a 24-hour delayed flight back from Harvard last night was one of those unique circumstances that make team sports so special. Also, today Dodi Telek broke the school record for goals scored in a season, and to be able to do that at home was another special moment in program history.
We have two more home games this weekend as we open conference play that we can't wait to get started."
