NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The CSUN men's volleyball celebrated Luke Krzmarzick in a pregame ceremony before the senior came off the bench to put down a team-high 11 kills but the Matadors were swept by UC Santa Barbara in their home finale Friday night at the Premier America Credit Union Arena.
With the straight-set win (25-20, 25-22, 25-22), the Gauchos snap a five-match skid and improve to 6-16 overall and move one game in front of the Matadors at 2-7 in the Big West. The loss drops CSUN to 12-14 overall and 1-8 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• Krzmarzick came on in place of an injured Kyle Hobus and matched his career-high with 11 kills. The senior from Torrance hit .364 on 22 attacks along with two aces, three digs and three blocks.
• Lorenzo Bertozzi added seven kills and six digs but hit just .105 on 19 swings. Griffin Walters chipped in six kills (.043), eight digs and three blocks while the Matador middles (Jackson Payne and Jano Tello) combined for seven kills with Payne hitting .800 on five attempts.
• The visiting Gauchos wound up out-hitting the Matadors .277 to .126 but CSUN would post a slim edge in blocks (8.5-8.0) and a 29-23 edge in digs.
• Ryan Wilcox led all hitters in the match with 18 kills, hitting .556 on 27 swings to lead UCSB.
SET 1
The Matadors got off to a good start, leading 4-1 when Hobus smashed down a Gaucho overpass. CSUN maintained a three-point lead at 5-2 and 6-3 when UCSB rallied to claim seven of the next 10 points to take a 10-9 lead. After a Bertozzi kill tied the score, the visitors would outscore the Matadors 7-2 over the next nine points to open up a 17-12 lead. The Gaucho lead would grow as large as seven at 24-17 when CSUN saved three set points before a UCSB kill ended the set.
SET 2
After out-hitting the Matadors .276 to .038 in set one, the Gauchos hit .290 to CSUN's .175 to open up a two-set lead. UCSB would claim six of the first eight points of the frame to force an early CSUN timeout. A 5-1 Matador run out of the timeout pulled CSUN even at 7-7. The Matadors would get kills from Krzmarzick and Bertozzi to take their first lead of the set at 9-8 and would extend the lead to two at 15-13. But five straight points by the visitors erased the CSUN lead putting UCSB back in front 18-15. The Matadors would get another Krzmarzick kill out of a timeout to pull within two. CSUN remained within two at 19-17 when three straight Gaucho points opened up a 22-17 advantage. The Matadors still trailed by five at 23-18 when a block by Payne and Krzmarzick fueled a 4-1 CSUN run that trimmed the lead to 24-22. But a Matador service error on the ensuing point sent UCSB to the 25-22 win.
SET 3
The two teams traded sideouts for the first 13 points of the final set when consecutive CSUN blocks put the Matadors in front 8-7. That would turn out to be CSUN's final lead of the night as UCSB struck for five of the next points to take the lead for good at 12-9. The Gaucho lead swelled to four at 14-10 when CSUN mounted a 6-3 run to pull within one at 17-16 following a Krzmarzick kill. But UCSB would counter with a 4-1 run to open up a 21-17 cushion and the Matadors would only get within two the rest of the set.Â
