Matadors Defeat CBU 12-3 for Fifth-Straight Win
4/3/2023 6:27:00 PM | Baseball
With heavy wins blowing out to right field , the Lancers were the first to take advantage of the elements. In the top of the first, Mitchel Simons belted a long fly ball into the wind in right field for a solo home run. CSUN would respond quickly in the bottom of the first when a walk and a double set the table for Kevin Fitzer to hit a sacrifice fly. Griffin followed with a double into wind to plate Ali Camarillo for a Matador 2-1 lead.
Wentz shook off the home run in the first inning to blank the Lancers over the next two innings while he stranded four total base runners over that span.
CBU again leaned on the long ball when Dusty Garcia hit a game-tying solo home run to right field in the top of the fourth. Wentz would walk the next batter but went on to retire the next two batters, keeping the score at 2-2.
As they did in the first inning, the Matadors answered back in the bottom half of the fourth. After Luc Stuka hit a leadoff double, Joey Kramer hit a wind-sided single to center field. Brandon Leon followed with a deep drive to right center field that was caught by Julian Alvarez, however, Stuka scored from second base on the play when Alvarez fell down and could not return the ball to the infield in time. Wilkinson capped off the scoring with an RBI double to put CSUN ahead 4-2.
CSUN's defense helped prevent CBU from scoring again in the fifth. The Lancers opened the inning with back-to-back singles but Fitzer threw out Simon attempting to go first to third base for the first out of the inning. Wentz rallied to retire two of the next three batters to maintain the lead.
The Matadors broke the game open over the sixth and seventh innings, plating eight runs over that span to stake to a 12-2 lead.
Camarillo first added to the lead in the sixth with an RBI single. Moments later, an error on a Fitzer groundball allowed two more runs to come across. In the seventh, CSUN sent 10 batters to the plate as Wilkinson collected an RBI single, Emanuel Dean registered an RBI double and Griffin stroked a two-run double.
Six Matador pitchers combined to toss the final four innings with Brayden Hiraki working the longest with a shutout inning. Joshua Romero picked up the final two out of the afternoon including a strikeout.
GAME NOTES
The Matadors completed their five-game homestand scoring 75 runs on 95 hits including 35 total extra base hits. With the win, CSUN improved to 12-2 at Matador Field this season with eight-straight wins.
Ali Camarillo stretched his hit streak to 12 games on Monday after going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Brayden Hiraki and Ryan Dominguez made their respective Matador debuts in the game. Hiraki tossed a shutout sixth, striking out two while Dominguez retired two batters in the seventh with a strikeout. Hayden Cody, Neil Feist and Joshua Romero each retired two batters. Aidan Colin struck out the only batter he faced in the ninth. In all, CSUN pitching struck out 10 batters.
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"We're at CSUN and [the wind] isn't unusual for us, especially when the temperature changes, so I thought overall the offense was excited the wind was blowing out. They were looking forward to seeing what they could do. I didn't let them take batting practice before the game and I limited them to the cage because I wanted them to have a disciplined approach.
I thought Ryan Wentz pitched really well even though he gave up the home runs. He came back and was competivie, especially with runners on base. He was making quality pitches and he pitched angry.
It's important for us to get on a plane, fly to a different part of the country and still be ourselves [this weekend]. I relish the opportunity to go this far away with the time change, being exhausted and seeing what we're capable of. I'm interested to see how they respond."

CSUN travels to Macon, Ga. to face Mercer in a three-game series starting Thursday at 3 p.m. PT.
