Matadors Make First-Ever Trip to Mercer for Weekend Series

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (18-6) travels across the country to Macon, Ga. this weekend for a three-game series at Mercer. The series opens Thursday at 3 p.m. PT before continuing on Friday at 3 p.m. PT and concluding on Saturday at 11 a.m. PT. PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUPS
CSUN at Mercer
RHP Lucas Braun (2-3, 4.01 ERA) vs. LHP Colton Cosper (1-2, 5.75 ERA)
RHP Thomas Bainton (3-1, 5.15 ERA) vs. RHP Ryan Lobus (3-2, 5.06 ERA)
RHP Kenji Pallares (4-1, 5.35 ERA) vs. RHP Josh Farmer (2-2, 5.20 ERA)
MATADOR COMPLETE PERFECT HOMESTAND
CSUN finished off a five-game homestand with a perfect 5-0 record on Monday afternoon. Over the weekend, the Matadors completed a three-game sweep of UC Riverside (18-6, 20-4, 13-7) before knocking off California Baptist 12-3.
In the first two games of the series with UCR, CSUN posted back-to-back 23-hit performances then finished off the series with a 17-hit output. The Matadors batted an even .500 at the plate over the three games (63-for-126) while they outscored the Highlanders 51-17. CSUN would finish with a total of 24 extra base hits and nine homers.
In the Matadors' 12-3 win over CBU, CSUN racked up eight doubles in a 16-hit attack. Ryan Wentz gave the Matadors five innings on the mound with two runs allowed for his second win of the season.
The Matadors posted a number of standout offensive performances over the weekend highlighted by Jakob Simons who went 10-for-15 at the plate in the UCR series with three home runs and nine RBI. Ali Camarillo finished 9-for-13 versus UCR with eight RBI. Kevin Fitzer drove in five runs in the 20-4 win over UC Riverside on Saturday while Shunsuke Sakaino had a 4-for-4 day in the finale. Bren Wilkinson, who hit his first career home run on Saturday, had a 4-for-5 performance against CBU on Monday.
MATADOR HEADLINES
CSUN completed a five-game homestand scoring 75 runs on 95 total hits. In all, the Matadors registered 22 doubles and 10 home runs while also stealing 13 bases in 14 chances. As a team, CSUN posted an even .500 on-base percentage and .743 slugging percentage in the five games. The Matadors also scored double digit runs in five-straight games for the first time since 2010.
CSUN's big week on the offensive end has vaulted the team to the top of The Big West in numerous offensive categories. The Matadors lead the league in batting average (.323), runs scored (206), hits (270), RBI (189), total bases (415), slugging percentage (.496), on-base percentage (.419), sacrifice hits (17) and stolen bases (43). CSUN's defense is also leading The Big West in fielding percentage (.977) while Matador pitching rank third in opponent batting average (.247).
Individually, Jakob Simons tops The Big West in home runs (8), stolen bases (10) and runs scored (27) while he is second in slugging percentage (.739), fourth in on-base percentage (.486) and batting average (.375), fifth in RBI (26) and ninth in hits (33). Graysen Tarlow checks in at second place in the conference in on-base percentage (.495), third in batting average (.392) and stolen bases (7), fourth in runs scored (25) and doubles (10), and 10th in slugging (.595). Other Big West batting average leaders include Ali Camarillo in second place (.406) and Kevin Fitzer in seventh place (.366). Shunsuke Sakaino is also second in the league in walks with 20.
On the pitching side, Lucas Braun is second in The Big West in strikeouts (55). Kenji Pallares (four wins) and Joshua Romero (five saves) top the conference in wins and saves, respectively.

The Bears hold a 19-11 record after posting a 19-7 win over Florida A&M on Tuesday. Mercer has gone 11-8 at OrthoGeorgia Park on the season. In 2022, Mercer went 40-18 overall and 12-9 in league play to finish second in the Southern Conference. The Bears were picked to again finish second in the league this year by the conference's head coaches. Craig Gibson is in his 20th season as head coach of the program.
Eric Toth tops the team with a .354 average at the plate to go with eight homers and 22 RBI. Treyson Hughes leads the squad with 40 runs and 30 RBI while batting .293 with eight home runs. Ty Dalley also has eight home runs on the year with 28 runs batted in. On the mound, Ryan Lobus (3-2) holds a team-high 38 strikeouts over 32.2 innings. As a team, Mercer has hit 46 home runs while batting .275.
