CSUN Battles Dayton to a 2-2 Tie; 3 Matadors Named To All-Tournament Team

COLUMBUS, Ohio—CSUN scored twice in the second half as the Matadors and the University of Dayton played a 2-2 tie Sunday afternoon to complete the Wolstein Classic at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
COACH DAVILA'S COMMENTS
Jamar Ricketts tied the score in the 63rd minute when he converted a Robert Kaemmerer pass into the low right part of the Dayton goal. The Matadors took the lead five minutes later. Paul Yeboah of Dayton was booked for a yellow card, resulting in a CSUN penalty kick. Bryan Bustamante took the PK, which Dario Caetano saved. Bustamante took the rebound and put it past Caetano for the lead. The Flyers tied the score in the 85th minute on a Geni Kanyane penalty kick.
The clubs each looked to take the lead in the 86th. Caetano saved a Ricketts attempt in the low center of the goal. On the ensuing possession, the Flyers' Danny May's blast was saved by Cooper Wenzel in the Matadors' low center goal. Dayton was awarded a corner kick with 21 seconds remaining, but CSUN was able to turn back the attack, leaving the game tied at two.

It was a physical match as the teams combined for 25 fouls (14 for Dayton, 11 for CSUN) and eight yellow cards (each team was whistled for four). CSUN limited Dayton to three shots in the second half as the Flyers outshot the Matadors 15-11. The Matadors took seven shots on goal, compared to six for Dayton. NOTES
- Levin Gerhardt, Ricketts, and Kaemmerer were named to the All-Tournament team.
- UC Davis defeated Ohio State to take the Wolstein Classic Team title. CSUN ended the tournament in second followed by Ohio State and Dayton.
- Sunday was the third meeting between the two clubs, with Dayton winning for the first time, evening up the series at 1-1-1.
- Dayton is now 0-1-1 on the year after losing 2-0 to UC Davis on Thursday night.
- CSUN 19 players saw the field for the Matadors, while the Flyers used 17.
- Wenzel started his 24th consecutive match in goal for CSUN, dating back to 2021, and has played 2,160 straight minutes for the Matadors.
