PROVO, Utah - CSUN freshman Nicole Tanoue fired a school record 65 in her first collegiate round and the Matador women's golf team carded a team round of 295 Sunday in round one of the Timpanogos Collegiate Invitational at Timpanogos Golf Club.
Tanoue began the day on the No. 2 tee and had five birdies and three pars on the front nine. She made birdie at No. 10 to get to 6-under before bogeys at No. 12 and No. 13 dropped her to 4-under. An eagle at No. 14 moved her back to 6-under and Tanoue would close with four pars and a birdie on her final hole to finish at day at 7-under 65,
Tanoue's round is one shot better than previous CSUN record-holder Ashlee Nagamine who fired a 6-under 66 at the Lamkin Grip/Cal Poly Invitational in 2009. Tanoue heads into Monday's second round tied with UT-Arlington's Kami Gabel for the individual lead.
As a team, the Matadors posted a 7-over 295 and are tied for 12th place in the 19-team field. Fresno State leads the team at 9-under 279, one shot better than Cal State Fullerton (280) and UT-Arlington (280). CSUN's 295 ties for the 13th-best total for 18 holes in program history.

COACH MICHELLE WINKLER SAID
"Today was just awesome all around. Our team chemistry is so positive yet professional. We all had great attitudes on the course and cheered for Nicole and Kim for their outstanding performances. This tournament was unique, as we didn't have a practice round. Now that we've actually seen the course, I believe we'll be more confident off the tee and with our decisions into the greens. I'm so happy for my team and am so proud to be their coach. I feel like we've already won!"
The Matadors will be paired with Tarleton State, UC Irvine and Utah Valley for round two which gets underway Monday morning at 8:30 a.m.
