NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - CSUN men's volleyball has announced its 2024 schedule as the Matadors will play a 28-match regular-season schedule before the 2024 Outrigger Big West Championship gets underway in Hawai'i on Apr. 18.
From Jan. 4 through Mar. 8, the Matadors will play 18 non-conference matches, 12 of those inside Premier America Credit Union Arena in Northridge. The 10-match Big West season gets underway Mar. 14 in La Jolla with the first of two matches against UC San Diego.
"We're definitely looking to raise the bar a bit in terms of scheduling," said second-year head coach Theo Edwards. "Our 2024 schedule features 12 teams that were ranked at some point last season and nine teams that were ranked in the final top-15 poll. When you talk about our non-conference season, it's as difficult a schedule as we've ever played but I know the team is excited about the challenge."
As they've done 19 times in the last 20 years, the Matadors open the season at the annual UCSB Invitational at Robertson Gym. CSUN will meet Grand Canyon, NJIT, and George Mason over the three-day tournament which runs from Jan. 4-6.
CSUN opens the home schedule Jan. 12 against Harvard, the first of 16 matches the Matadors will play on their home court in 2024. The opening month of the season wraps up with home matches against Cal Lutheran (Jan. 16) Princeton (Jan. 19) and Central State (Jan. 27) and a road match at USC (Jan. 24).
February opens with a pair of road matches at Stanford (Feb. 2-3) before CSUN returns to Northridge to open a season-long, eight-match homestand against UC Merced on Feb. 7. The homestand concludes in early March as the University of Charleston (Mar. 1), Penn State (Mar. 5) and Merrimack College (Mar. 8) will visit the Valley.Â
"Penn State was a final four team a season ago while Charleston and Merrimack are relatively new volleyball programs," said Edwards. "One of the biggest things for us is for our fans to see the varied level of teams that dot the collegiate men's volleyball landscape and see first-hand the growth of the sport. The fact that we're playing a majority of the non-conference matches at home is a huge benefit for us."
The 2024 Big West season opens Mar. 14 at UC San Diego as CSUN will play home-and-home series' with the Tritons (Mar. 14-15), UC Irvine (Mar. 29-30), Long Beach State (Apr. 5-6), and UC Santa Barbara (Apr. 12-13). The Matadors will play a pair of matches in Honolulu against Hawai'i on Mar. 22-23.
"I'm sure the Big West will be exactly what we expect it to be, it's the best volleyball conference in the country," added Edwards. "We get to go to Hawaii this year which is always a great trip, I know the guys on this team are poised to make some noise in the Big West this season."
After the 2023 Outrigger Big West Men's Volleyball Championship was played at UCI's Bren Events Center, the championship tournament returns to Hawai'i in 2024 as the sixth incarnation of the postseason championship opens on April 18 at SimpliFi Arena at the Stan Sheriff Center. After a pair of quarterfinal matches on Thursday, semifinal matches will be played on Apr. 19 with the Big West Championship match slated for Saturday, Apr. 20.Â
The 2024Â NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship will be contested May 2-4 at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach.
