FULLERTON, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer received a goal from Izabel Reyes in the 84th minute to earn a 1-1 tie at Cal State Fullerton on Sunday evening at Titan Stadium. Reyes' goal was her second of the season. Goalkeeper Hayden Mauldin finished with seven saves in front of the goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Izabel Reyes created the first shot of the match in the third minute, but the Titans would control the early portion of the game on the offensive end. After an early corner kick, the Titans took three shots over a minute span with two on frame. Hayden Mauldin finished with six of her seven saves in the first half alone. However, the Titans eventually broke through in the 23rd minute via a set piece. On the play, the ball was sent low into a scrum near the six-yard line. Jaden Hall was able to control possession before sending a high shot that sailed over the outstretched hands of Mauldin and in the net.
After being outshot 15-6 in the first half, CSUN turned the tables in the second period. After an early miss from Reyes, CSUN nearly evened the game in the 49th minute when Cailey Jackson found room inside the box but had her shot just saved by goalkeeper Mia Ranson in front of the goal. The Matadors would outshoot the Titans 5-4 over the final 45 minutes while CSUN's defense held the Titans at bay. Mauldin made her only save of the second half on a shot from Laurie Ann Moise in the 79th minute.
Â
CSUN looked for the equalizer until the 84th minute when Reyes finally squared the game. On the play, Kacie Garrity sent a high pass to the top of the box where Jackie Victorio flicked the ball to a streaking Reyes on the right. Reyes would finish with an eight-yard attempt that just snuck inside the back post. The Matadors held off the Titans in the closing minutes including a late attempt from Vanessa Buso to secure the draw.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH CHRISTINE JOHNSON
"I'm so proud of this team. They have dealt with nothing but adversity all season and they continue to show up and get better in each match. We started well but struggled when Fullerton changed formations and personnel. We started to get away from what we do well, and it became very casual. We can be our worst opponent at times. We conceded on a corner, so we weren't happy about that especially since that was something we identified in our game plan. We chased the game and never stopped chasing. A point earned against a quality opponent is something we will feel good about."
