NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer returns to Matador Soccer Field Thursday night to take on Cal State Bakersfield. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
HOW TO FOLLOW
CSUN's Thursday night match will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Ghizal Hasan and Charlie Gonzalez on the call.
LAST WEEK'S MATCHES
CSUN earned two points in Big West action last week. The Matadors played UC Davis to a scoreless draw last Thursday at Matador Soccer Field before battling back from a late deficit for a 1-1 tie at Cal State Fullerton on Sunday night. Izabel Reyes hit the back of the net in the 84th minute to help lift CSUN to a point against the Titans.
CSUN's defense would hold the opposition to one goal over the two matches including zero goals after halftime. On defense, Hayden Mauldin had seven saves in each contest in front of the goal.
MATADOR HEADLINES
Izabel Reyes' goal at Cal State Fullerton was her team-high second strike of the season. With seven shots over the last two matches, Reyes leads the Matadors with 18 shots taken and nine on goal. Three other Matadors have one goal on the season, which include Ashley Cruz, Ashly Torres and Yoshi Rubalcava.
On the backline, Angelica Claiborne has played the most minutes among the team's field players at 990. Claiborne, who has competed in 11 of 12 games, had played full time in every match she has participated in. Kacie Garrity is behind Claiborne in minutes played with 958.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hayden Mauldin collected her first career Big West Defensive Player of Week award on Monday. Mauldin allowed just one goal in 180 minutes in front of the goal in CSUN's two draws. She finished with 14 saves against 39 total shots while earning her second shutout of 2023. On the year, Mauldin tops The Big West with 65 saves and ranks third in saves per game at 5.42.
SERIES HISTORY
CSUN leads Cal State Bakersfield 5-3-1 in the all-time series. The Roadrunners have won the last two in the series while the Matadors are winless over their last three matches with CSUB. CSUN held an early lead in last season's meeting before CSUB scored three unanswered goals for a 3-1 win. The Matadors' last win in the series took place on Sept. 16, 2018 in a 2-0 win in Bakersfield.
SCOUTING CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD
The Roadrunners hold a 1-5-3 overall record and 0-0-2 mark in Big West play. CSUB played one game last week, battling to a 2-2 tie against UC Davis. The team's other Big West draw took place on Sept. 14 in a 1-1 tie at UC San Diego. Prior to the season, CSUB was picked to finish 11th in Big West Preseason Coaches Poll. Seven Roadrunners have hit the net this season. The quartet of Karen Flores, Regielly Hallsdorsdottir, Selena Hernandez and Jette Zimmer share the team lead in points with three apiece. In goal, Hollee Hercik sports a team-high 35 saves to go with a 1.63 goals-against-average.
