CSUN Takes on Hawai'i in Big West Home Opener

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (11-3, 2-0 Big West) opens the home portion of its Big West slate on Saturday when the Matadors face Hawai'i at 5 p.m. Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister have the call on ESPN+ and GoMatadors.com/Radio.
ABOUT LAST WEEK
CSUN opened Big West play on Dec. 28 with an 83-73 victory at Cal Poly. Dionte Bostick led the way with a season-high 22 points while Jasman Sangha recorded a career-best 19 points and De'Sean Allen-Eikens added 19 of his own. After trailing by seven early, the Matadors opened up a 17-point lead on an 18-3 run near the end of the first half. Sangha scored 17 of his 19 points in the first half alone to lead the team. Cal Poly would fight back to within one in the second half, but CSUN never relinquished the lead as Bostick led the charge with 18 points in the second period.
The Matadors won their sixth in a row by posting an impressive 84-68 win at Long Beach State, handing the Beach their first home loss of the season. Five Matadors scored in double figures with Bostick scoring 21 points. Keonte Jones recorded his third double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Allen-Eikens had 14 points. The first half featured 13 lead changes and 11 ties before CSUN took control in the second half, outscoring the Beach 41-31. CSUN led by double-digits for the final 16 minutes of the game. The Matadors gave the Beach their largest margin of defeat since Feb. 1, 2020.
OFF TO A HOT START
Under the direction of first-year head coach Andy Newman, CSUN stands at 11-3 overall on the season, winners of six consecutive games and with a 2-0 Big West record. The Matadors' 14-game start to the season is tied with the 2007-08 squad for the best start in CSUN's Division I history. The team's six-game winning streak is also the program's best since 2012-13, and one short of tying a school Division I record. Earlier this season, CSUN won three consecutive road non-conference games, setting a new school D-1 mark as well.
BOSTICK NAMED BIG WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior guard Dionte Bostick collected his first career Big West Player of the Week award on Jan. 1. Bostick averaged a team-high 21.5 points to go with 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.0 assists per game in helping CSUN start 2-0 in Big West play. The 6-2 guard also shot 46.9 percent from the floor (15-of-32). Bostick scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half against Cal Poly on Dec. 28 while he would tally 21 in a double-digit win at Long Beach State on Dec. 30.
ON THE NATIONAL CHARTS
CSUN enters the weekend seventh in the nation in both rebounds per game (43.8) and defensive rebounds per game (30.5) while its ranked eighth in rebounding margin (+12.4). The Matadors are The Big West leaders in all of those categories as well as the conference leader in offensive rebounds per game at 13.3.
BIG WEST LEADERBOARDS
CSUN enters week two of The Big West season tops in the conference in points per game (80.6) while the Matadors are third in field goal percentage (47.9) and fourth in assists per game (14.5). On the defensive side, CSUN leads The Big West in opponent field goal percentage (38.6) and opponent 3-point field goal percentage (28.0). The Matadors are also second in the conference in steals per game (8.6).
De'Sean Allen-Eikens ranks third in The Big West in points per game (19.4) while Dionte Bostick is eighth on the list (16.6). On the rebounding list, Keonte Jones checks in at fourth place at 7.3 per game followed by Allen-Eikens in sixth place (6.2). Jones is also second in the conference in steals per game (1.9) and blocks per game (1.4) to go with averaging 12.8 points. In assists per game, Jared Barnett is fourth (3.9) and Jordan Brinson is eighth (3.7).
SCOUTING HAWAI'I
The Rainbow Warriors hold a 9-5 overall record with a 1-1 mark in Big West play. Hawai'i snapped a three-game skid with its first conference win on Thursday at Cal State Bakersfield (78-67). The Bows have won three of four games away from home this year. Prior to the season, Hawai'i was picked to finish third in The Big West by the league's head coaches.
Noel Coleman tops the team in scoring at 14.9 points while Bernardo da Silva is averaging 10.9 points and Justin McKoy is averaging 10.3 points. Da Silva ranks fifth in The Big West in rebounds per game at 6.7. As a team, Hawai'i is second in the conference in scoring defense (66.2).
Series History: Hawai'i leads CSUN 22-8 in the all-time series with wins in four consecutive games. Last season, the Rainbow Warriors won 81-55 in Northridge and 58-51 at home. The Matadors seek their first win over the Bows since an overtime win on Feb. 20, 2021 by an 88-80 score.
