CSUN Falls to Hawai'i on the Road

HONOLULU, Hawai'i—CSUN Women's Basketball fell to Hawai'i by the final score of 67-38 on Saturday in SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Talo Li-Uperesa led the Matadors in scoring with eight points to go with eight rebounds while Kayanna Spriggs finished with nine rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors opened the game with a driving layup by Li-Uperesa. The Rainbow Wahine quickly matched the score with two free throws before they took the lead with a jumper and hook shot. CSUN refused to fold as Arina Nikishina made a layup, followed by a 3-pointer by Amiyah Ferguson. The duo cut the deficit to 10-7. Moments later, Li-Uperesa put the ball into the basket with a second-chance layup, bringing CSUN closer at 10-9. Nikishina tied the game at 11-11 before Hawai'i scored a late basket for a 14-11 lead after one.
CSUN continued to fight in the second quarter as Erica Adams and Ferguson made a layup each, bringing the Matadors to within 16-15. Hawai'i tried to pull away again, but Laney Amundsen made a basket to cap a 5-0 run, evening the game at 20-20. However, the Rainbow Wahine went on a 12-0 run to the close the half to take a 32-20 lead as CSUN went without a point over the final four-plus minutes.
CSUN opened the third quarter with a layup by Li-Uperesa but would go scoreless the rest of the period. Meanwhile, the Rainbow Wahine went on an 17-0 run to break open the game. The Matadors opened the final quarter with two layups by Spriggs and a free throw by Adams, trimming the deficit to 49-27. The Rainbow Wahine though continued to pull away, extending their lead to 57-29 with six minutes to play. CSUN clawed back to within 61-38 on a jumper from Ana Carolina De Jesus but the Matadors were unable to get closer the rest of the way.
