CSUN Drops Home Battle with UC Davis

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN fell to UC Davis 55-45 on Thursday night in the Premier America Credit Union Arena. Kayanna Spriggs led the team in scoring with 11 points and nine rebounds on the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Aggies opened the game with a 3-pointer. The Matadors quickly fired back with a layup and free throw by Spriggs to tie the game. UC Davis reclaimed the lead though with an 11-0 run, before the Matadors interrupted with a 3-pointer by Kaitlyn Elsholz. That basket was followed by a layup from Talo Li-Uperesa, bringing CSUN to within 14-8. The Aggies scored four-straight points, but the Matadors went on a 5-0 run as the first quarter ended at 18-13.
UC Davis began the second quarter, but the Matadors quickly took control of the court. Rachel Harvey began CSUN's strike with a layup. Harvey's shot was followed by baskets from Spriggs and Elsholz as the trio closed the distance to 20-19. The Aggies went on to another 4-0 run before Amiyah Ferguson disrupted the run with a jumper. The Matadors slowly closed the distance as the first half ended with CSUN narrowly behind UC Davis at 29-25.
The Aggies opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer that Laney Amundsen quickly matched. UC Davis and CSUN traded shots, but the Matadors would still trail 43-35 with 2:27 left on the clock. The Matadors stayed within the 10-point deficit as the third quarter closed at 47-37.
CSUN began the final quarter with two free throws by Erica Adams. Both teams went scoreless for the next two minutes before the Matadors scored again with two free throws by Spriggs to trim the deficit to 47-41. UC Davis though would hold off CSUN down stretch, outscoring the Matadors 8-5 in the closing moments.
NOTES OF THE GAME
• CSUN drops to 2-12 overall and 0-4 in the Big West while UC Davis improves to 7-8 overall and 3-2 in conference.
• Adams led the team in steals with three.
• CSUN out-rebounded UC Davis, 48-42, and led in bench points, 20-7.
• UC Davis led in blocks, 9-1.
• The Matadors would outscore the Aggies 12-0 in second chance points.
• The teams were tied in points in the paint at 22-22.

"We did get after it on the defensive end. They are a great three-point shooting team and we did a decent job holding them to 7-of-25. At the end of the day, you've got to put the ball in the hoop. Obviously, we're struggling with that.
"I'm so appreciate of our team. They continue to battle and it could be a lot worse. They want to win and compete. They play hard and are super respectful."

CSUN hits the road to take on Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
