NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Sophomore Hailey Brockway led CSUN with 10 kills and Katie Kolar notched her eighth double-double of the season but the Matadors came up short as visiting Long Beach State defeated CSUN 27-25, 25-12, 25-19 in a Big West match Thursday night at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
Brockway was the lone Matador in double figures with 10 kills but struggled on the night, hitting .031 on 32 swings. Leah Miller added eight kills (.158) and Amaris Smith chipped in seven kills on .286 hitting. Kolar was a bright spot for CSUN, posting 25 assists along with a match-high 10 digs.
The Beach posted a sizable advantage in both hitting (.337-.058) and blocks (11-5) while each team served four aces.
S1 – The Matadors looked good early in the opening set as an Autumn Rojelio ace opened up a 12-8 CSUN lead. The visitors would then engineer a 6-3 run that trimmed a four-point deficit to one at 15-14. The Matadors would maintain a two-point lead following an ace from Grace Strone before a Miller kill gave the Matadors a 21-18 lead. After Long Beach battled back to tie the score at 22-22, CSUN took two of the next three to set up set point at 24-23. After a Beach kill, the Matadors had another set point at 25-24 but the Beach would claim the final three points in a 27-25 comeback win.
S3 – The two teams traded sideouts during the early portion of the final set. By the media timeout, Long Beach State would use a 3-1 run to snap a 12-12 tie to take a 15-13 lead into the media timeout. A 7-2 run by the Beach would forced a pair of CSUN timeouts while opening up a 22-15 advantage. The Matadors would rally back to within five on a pair of occasions down the stretch but could get no closer as Long Beach closed out the sweep with a 25-19 win.
