CSUN's Second-Half Rally Falls Short at Bakersfield, 2-1

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.---CSUN Men's Soccer's late rally fell just short in a 2-1 loss at Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday at the Main Soccer Field. Zion Wagoner scored the Matadors' lone tally on the evening. The Matadors led in nearly early offensive category but could not find the equalizer late in the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN went on the attack in the first five minutes of the match, picking up three shots over that span. However, Bakersfield would crack the scoring column first in the 26th minute. After a long pass into the final third of the field, Filip Arras drove from the left side and set up Bilal Mihoubi in the middle of the box. Mihoubi finished the play with a left-footed shot into the corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. The Matadors looked for the response, resulting in two corner kicks and five shots over a five-minute span. Jorge Solorzano later had a shot blocked before he missed high of the net as the score remained the same until the final minute of the first half. Bakersfield made a drive up the field in the closing seconds of the period, leading to a left-footed shot from Connor Mautino that struck the net.
Looking up a two-goal deficit, the Matadors would pressure the 'Runners for seemingly the entire second half. Shortly after Michael Blevins had a shot saved, the Matadors gained a corner kick in the 60th minute of action. Solorzano sent in the corner kick near the goal line before it was punched out by goalkeeper Zenden Hart. Wagoner picked up the loose ball and sent in a shot inside the far post to trim the deficit to 2-1.
Â
Down the stretch of the half, the Matadors gained several looks at net including Arturo Reveles who had his shot saved in the 70th minute. CSUN picked up three consecutive corner kicks near the 77th minute with two shots blocks during that span. Solorzano also hit the crossbar in another close call while Sebatian Fuentes missed high of the net. CSUN registered two more corner kicks in the 86th minute, but Bakersfield survived each attempt. The Matador defense prevented a third Bakersfield goal in the 90th minute as Mihoubi had his shot blocked in front of the goal. CSUB hit the net shortly thereafter, but the goal was waived off on an offside call.
