NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer dropped a 2-0 decision to Cal Poly on Thursday at Matador Soccer Field. The Mustangs held the Matadors off the scoreboard despite eight shots on goal for CSUN. Riley Liebsack finished with nine saves in front of the goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN nearly struck first in the seventh minute of play when Kaylee Gutierrez received a long pass up the middle of the field. Gutierrez beat her defender and went one-on-one with goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel before sending a chip shot over the top, however, a Mustang defender was able to run down the ball before it crossed the goal line. Cal Poly though found the game's first goal in the 22nd minute of action. RIley Liebsack who had three saves up to that point, could not stop an attack from Cal Poly as Jessie Halladay set up Kate Reedy for the score in front of the goal. The Matadors looked for a response, generating attacks leading to shots on frame from Yoshi Rubalcava, Jordyn Canister, Cami Alarcon and Sami Kolin, but CSUN entered halftime trailing 1-0.
Early in the second half, the Mustangs doubled their lead on a drive up the left side of the field. Emily Nedom delivered a cross to the far post where Halladay finished the play with a header to stretch the lead to 2-0. The Matadors would keep battling down the stretch as they produced a series of close calls at the net. Perhaps the closest came in the 84th minute when Canister got past her defender on the left and sent a shot through Samuel, but the shot smacked off the left post. Canister almost hit the net on another strike in the 88th minute before Samuel made a timely save.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH GINA BREWER
"We've been saying over an over again that we need to put together a 90-minute performance with all 11 players playing their absolute best to beat some of these good Big West teams. Unfortunately, we didn't put together the full 90-minute performance that we were looking for. We had moments, at the end of the game where we had chances, but we have to be able to put that together for the whole entire game. We've got to start faster and improve on a lot of things that we've been talking about with regards to how we want to defend against them and how we have to attack, and I think it took us a little while to get going."
