CSUN Hosts Cal Poly Before Facing UCSB on Senior Night This Week

GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUNÂ Women's Soccer hosts its final two home games of the regular season this week including the team's Senior Night. The Matadors face Cal Poly on Thursday at 6 p.m. before taking on UC Santa Barbara on Sunday at 7 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+. Prior to Sunday's home regular season finale, the Matadors will honor their four-member senior class in a special Senior Night ceremony.
FOR STARTERS
CSUN enters play this week at 4-9-2 overall and 2-2-2 in Big West play with four conference matches left to play. The Matadors are currently tied for fifth place with UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton at eight points each in the Big West standings. CSUN though is just two points back of third place in the standings currently occupied by Cal State Bakersfield and Long Beach State. The top six spots in the Big West will advance to the conference tournament while the top four earn home field advantage for their first postseason match. After this week, CSUN will play its final two regular season contests away from home, first at Cal State Bakersfield on Oct. 24 then at UC Davis on Oct. 31.
ABOUT LAST WEEK
CSUN came away with a point on the road with a 2-2 tie at UC Riverside last Sunday. The Matadors fell behind in the 15th minute after UC Riverside scored on the penalty kick for a 1-0 lead. CSUN though responded in the 27th minute when Jordyn Canister and Sami Kolin assisted Yoshi Rubalcava on a deep goal from nearly 25 yards. The score remained tied until the 70th minute when the Matadors earned a penalty kick of their own. Sunny Bowlin-Stacy stepped up and hit the back of the net to give the Matadors a 2-1 edge. The lead was short lived, however, with UC Riverside hitting the equalizer in the 76th minute. The two sides played to a standstill the rest of the way.
MATADOR LEADERS
After hitting the net once more last Sunday, Yoshi Rubalcaba netted her team-best fifth goal of the season while she tops the squad as well with 12 points. Cailey Jackson has scored three times followed by Kayden Perigo who has two goals on the year. The trio of Rubalcava, Jackson and Ashly Torres lead CSUN in assists with two apiece. In the shot department, Jordyn Canister has taken 30 attempts to top CSUN to go with three points. In goal, Riley Liebsack has seen every minute, producing 77 saves with a 1.47 goals-against-average.
SENIOR SALUTE
CSUN will honor its four-member senior class consisting of Ashly Torres, Angelica Claiborne, Brooklin Woolf and Kaylee Gutierrez prior to Sunday's match. Torres has spent the past four years with the Matadors, totaling 72 matches and 62 starts while tallying one goal, four assists and six points as a steady presence in the defensive midfield. A stalwart on defense, Claiborne has started 62 of 71 matches over the past four seasons with CSUN, racking up 17 shots with one assist. Injury has limited Brooklin Woolf's senior season on the field, but the defender has played in 27 matches over three seasons with CSUN after she begun her career at Fresno State. Gutierrez has spent the past two seasons with CSUN after starting her collegiate career at Mt. SAC as she has one goal, one assist and three points in 33 matches as a Matador.
TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT
CSUN has now played in 11 total matches this season that finished in either a draw or by a one-goal outcome. The Matadors are 3-6 in one-goal games this season while the team has played in six of the last 10 matches decided by a goal. CSUN's defense has been strong in recent matches, limiting the opposition to seven goals through six Big West matches. Overall, the Matadors have allowed nine goals over their last eight games after giving up 13 over their first seven matches to start 2024.
SCOUTING CAL POLY
The Mustangs are 3-8-3 overall with a 1-3-1 record in Big West play. Cal Poly dropped a 2-0 decision to UC Irvine and played to a 2-2 draw with Long Beach State in last week's action. The team has gone 2-3-1 away from home this season. Prior to the year, Cal Poly was slotted as second in the Big West Preseason Coaches' Poll. As a team, Cal Poly has scored 17 goals, good enough for sixth in the Big West. Annika Smith tops the team in goals with five to rank third in the conference while Kate Reedy and Whitney Wiley have three goals each. In front of the goal, Mackenzie Samuel sports a 1.30 GAA with 36 saves and two shutouts.
Series History:Â Cal Poly leads CSUN 11-9-3 in the all-time series with victories in three consecutive matches. The Mustangs prevailed by a 4-0 margin last season in San Luis Obispo while Cal Poly picked up a 3-0 victory in its last trip to CSUN in 2022. The Matadors' last win in the series was a 2-0 win in 2019 at Matador Soccer Field.
SCOUTING UC SANTA BARBARA
The Gauchos come in with a 6-3-6 overall record and 4-0-2 league mark. The team played just once last week, battling to a scoreless draw at Cal State Fullerton on Sunday. Prior to the season, UCSB was picked to finish sixth in the Big West. As a team, the Gauchos are first in the Big West in fewest goals allowed (11) and goals-against-average (0.73) while they rank fourth in goals scored (18). Devin Greer leads the Gauchos and ranks third in the league in goals with five followed by the trio of Jessica Carlton, O'Callaghan Liu and Chayse Yu with two goals each. Maddie Buckley tops the Big West with a 0.72 GAA to go with 42 saves and seven shutouts.
Series History: UCSBÂ holds a 19-11-1 edge over CSUN in the all-time matchup. The Gauchos have won the last three meetings including notching a 1-0 decision last season in Santa Barbara as a result of an 88th-minute penalty kick. CSUN's last win in the series was a 1-0 Big West tournament semifinal win in 2019.
