NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---An eighth-minute goal held up in CSUN Men's Soccer's 1-0 loss at the hands of UC Irvine on Saturday at Matador Soccer Field. The Matadors led the way in the shots department but could not find the equalizer despite a variety of close calls at the net.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After three early shots from the Matadors, UC Irvine jumped in front on its first shot attempt of the match in the eighth minute of play. The Anteaters played the ball on the left wing before a cross from Brady Treinen set up Misael Gonzalez for the goal in front of the net. UCI led the way in shots 7-3 in the first half while the Anteaters generated five corner kicks in the period, but the Matadors' defense held firm to stay within striking distance.
In the second half, the Matadors played as the aggressors, earning a series of solid looks at the net. Jorge Solorzano missed high of the net early in the period while Arturo Reveles was just off the mark to the right on his attempt. Zion Wagoner put a shot on frame from above the box in the 62nd minute and CSUN came close again on a header from Deryk Jones, Jr. minutes later. In the final 10 minutes of action, the Matadors came perhaps the closest to evening the match. Off a corner kick in the 81st minute, Reveles was open at the far post and delivered a header that was just wide. David Garcia also nearly found the equalizer on two headers late in the match as goalkeeper Paul Jing stopped each attempt. Ian Boras had the Matadors' last shot of the match, which sailed high.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH TERRY DAVILA
"It's been a trying league season. We got blown out at Sacramento State by a good team that's on a roll. We played a fine UC Irvine team, which were Big West champions last year. We thought we played well enough to win. Maybe it's a service or maybe it's a block, an extra run or a detail, but something's not clicking and it wasn't because of a lack of effort tonight. Every parent for everyone on the field tonight can be proud of their sons. They gave it everything they got.Â
"We're all in this together and we're going to get through this adversity together. We're going to keep doing the right thing, keep plugging at it, keep working hard and be the best we could be."
