
UC Davis Holds Off CSUN's Upset Bid

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The CSUN women's volleyball team battled league-leading UC Davis to five sets before falling 15-6 in the fifth in a Big West match Saturday afternoon at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
For the Matadors (7-12, 2-6 Big West), Hailey Brockway put down a match-high 20 kills, hitting .153 on 59 swings which matches her season-high. She added 12 digs and two blocks for her team-high ninth double-double of the season. Leah Miller and Amaris Smith also reached double digits in kills with 15 and 12 respectively. Miller hit .308 on 39 attacks while Smith hit .095 on 42 swings.
CSUN hit .169 (60-27-195) as a team to UC Davis' .239 (63-20-180). The Aggies served 10 team aces to the Matadors' four and also had a 86-78 edge in digs and an 11-7 edge in blocks.
S1 l UCD 25, CSUN 23
In a tightly contested opening set, neither team led by more than two points until a CSUN hitting error gave the visiting Aggies a 16-13 lead. Still down three at 19-16, the Matadors used a 3-1 run to pull within one at 20-19 following a Grace Stone ace. CSUN would trail by one again at 21-20, 23-22, and 24-23 when UC Davis connected for a kill sending the Aggies to the 25-23 win.
S2 l CSUN 25, UCD 23
After hitting .143 in set one, the Matadors out-hit the Aggies .292 to .282 in the second set to even the match. CSUN claimed six of the opening seven points of the set before UC Davis battled back to tie the score at 8-8. The Matadors countered with a 6-1 run to force another UCD timeout following a Miller kill at 14-9. The Aggies again rallied, using an 11-4 run to take a 20-18 lead. The Matadors would score three straight to re-take the lead 21-20 and CSUN would not surrender the lead.

S3 l UCD 25, CSUN 17
Trailing 5-4 early in the third set, UC Davis would outscore the Matadors 13-4 over the next 17 points to open up a 17-9 cushion. CSUN would trim the lead to four (18-14) following a Brockway kill but the visitors would pull away for the eight-point win.
S4 l CSUN 26, UCD 24
In a set that featured 12 ties and six lead changes, CSUN snapped a 9-9 tie by claiming four of the next five points to lead 13-10 following another Brockway kill. The Matadors would maintain a three-point lead at 19-16 when UCD used a 4-2 run to close to within 21-20. CSUN would claim the next three points to take set point at 24-20 when the visitors saved four set points to force extra points. But kills from Miller and Brockway snapped a 24-24 tie giving the Matadors a 26-24 win.

S5 l UCD 15, CSUN 6
The Aggies out-hit the Matadors .353 to -.056 in the fifth and deciding set to take a 15-6 win. After Brockway's 20th kill pulled CSUN within 8-6, the Aggies would score the final seven points to win their seventh straight match.
NOTES
- CSUN slips to 4-4 in eight five-set matches this season.
- CSUN setter Katie Kolar posted her 10th double-double of the season with 45 assists and 12 digs.
- Libero Paige Sentes led all players in the match with 25 digs.

CSUN continues its two-match homestand next week as the Matadors host Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday (Oct. 24) at 6 p.m.
