CSUN Draws with UCSB on Senior Night

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer battled UC Santa Barbara to 0-0 draw on Senior Night on Sunday at Matador Soccer Field. Junior goalkeeper Riley Liebsack tallied five saves in earning her third shutout of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Needing points to keep pace in the Big West postseason race, CSUN gave UC Santa Barbara all it could handle over 90 minutes of back and forth play on Sunday. The Gauchos posted all three shots in the first half, all of which coming in the first seven minutes of action. Liebsack made her only save of the first period, stopping an attempt from Devin Green. UCSB played aggressively in the first half, leading to six offside calls over the 45-minute session as the score remained deadlocked at 0-0.
In the second half, UCSB challenged the Matador net over the course of the period, but CSUN's defense would be up for the test. Liebsack picked up a big save in the 56th minute, deflecting a free kick from Emily Caughey over the crossbar and out of bounds. CSUN's netminder made another timely stop on a high shot from Jaclyn Degido that was stopped but not controlled initially. Liebsack though quickly gathered the loose ball to prevent a second shot. On the flip side, the Matadors had their scoring opportunities as well down the stretch of the match. After earning a corner kick in the 73rd minute, the Matadors gained a strong header from Sami Kolin, but the attempt sailed just high. Ashly Torres would perhaps have CSUN's best look at the goal in the 78th minute when she made a long run from the left wing. Torres looked to send the ball inside the far post, however the shot was just off the mark of the net.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH GINA BREWER
"We knew coming in it was going to be a very tough game. Santa Barbara is a good opponent, they've had a lot of really good results lately. We just knew it was going to be a tough defensive battle and we would have to bring it for 90 minutes while not having any letdowns. I'm really proud of the team and I thought we worked extremely hard. Although, we would have wanted a goal and to get the win, we're happy with the result and the draw at home against a really tough opponent.
"I've been really impressed with this group of seniors. They've done a fantastic job with their leadership. I wasn't sure what to expect [at the beginning of the year], but they have gone above and beyond both on and off the field with changing the culture of our group and what we're all about. I'm going to miss them. I wish we had more time with this group, but I'm very proud of the foundation that they've laid in a short amount of time. We hope to send them off with an opportunity to go to the Big West tournament."
