BAKERSFIELD, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer earned an important three points in the Big West standings with a thrilling 2-1 road victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday evening the Main Soccer Field. Cailey Jackson headed in the game winner in the 87th minute to lift the Matadors to the victory while Cassidy Imperial-Pham netted her first goal of the season earlier in the match. In goal, Riley Liebsack was credited with four saves in the match.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Bakersfield recorded the first two shots of the match, the Matadors would break the scoreless tie in the 17th minute. A CSUB clear out led to the scoring play as Ashly Torres followed with a pass to the left near post where Imperial-Pham found the back of the net on a diving header in front of the goal.
Â
CSUN led until the 32nd minute when a costly foul just above the top of the box led to solid field positioning for Cal State Bakersfield. Miah Thomas took the free kick and delivered a high shot that sailed over the outstretched hands of Liebsack into the net. Minutes later, Angelica Claiborne put a shot on frame from close range, but goalkeeper Mya Clarke made a two-handed save as the score remained deadlocked at 1-1 heading into intermission.
The teams battled it out over the final 45 minutes of action with each side looking for the go-ahead tally. Jackson had a pair of shots stopped by Clarke early in the second half while the 'Runners were denied on stops from Liebsack in the 52nd and 60th minutes of play. CSUB threatened again on an attempt from Kim Garcia, but Liebsack stuffed the low shot in the 77th minute.
CSUN also had its share of looks throughout the second half, producing eight total shots in the period. However, the go-ahead goal would not come until the 87th minute after a Bakersfield foul. On the free kick, the ball was kicked inside a crowd in front of the goal before Samantha Healy reclaimed possession for CSUN and directed a pass to the six yard mark where Jackson headed a high shot into the net to put the Matadors on top 2-1.
Â
Bakersfield frantically looked for the equalizer and picked up several looks at the net moments after the Jackson goal, but CSUN's defense stood tall during a wild sequence. In a crucial defense stand, Liebsack made two saves from close range, one of which from the ground, and Claiborne made a third save at the goal line before the Matadors were able to clear the ball out of their box. CSUN controlled the clock over the last two minutes to ensure the 2-1 victory.
