CSUN Plays to 1-1 Draw with Cal Poly on Senior Night
10/26/2024 9:45:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Senior Marley Edwards hit the net on a penalty kick as CSUN Men's Soccer wrapped up its home schedule with a 1-1 draw against Cal Poly on Saturday evening at Matador Soccer Field. The Mustangs would hit the equalizer in the second half before just holding off CSUN down the stretch of the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors started fast, recording three corner kicks over the first 10 minutes of action. The team's aggressive play led to a Mustang foul with goalkeeper Nicky McCune fouling a streaking Deryk Jones, Jr. with the ball loose in the 12th minute. After an official review, the Matadors were awarded a penalty kick with Edwards chosen to take the shot. The senior calmly struck the net with a right-footed shot for a 1-0 CSUN lead.

CSUN kept up the pressure on the Mustang defense, gaining solid looks from Zack Harris and Odin Rosten, which each just off the mark. Cal Poly put one shot on frame in the first half as Colin Pearce executed the attempt in the 41st minute, but goalkeeper Merrick Cook made the timely save.
After halftime, the Matadors maintained a 1-0 lead until the 59th minute when a CSUN foul just above its box led to strong field positioning for the Mustangs. Joaquin Torres took the free kick and fired the ball over the defense and inside the left corner of the net to square the match at 1-1. The Mustangs looked to go ahead after another free kick led to a header from Quinn Mahoney, but Cook left his feet for a save.
CSUN had it share of good looks down the stretch of the second half. In the 73rd minute, Michael Blevins had one of the nearest goals of the period when he took a shot from the 20-yard mark that forced McCune to dive to his right for the save. In another close call, Blevins headed a cross from Zack Harris high at the net before McCune made the stop. McCune's momentum pushed him backward on the save, but he managed to keep the ball just clear of the goal line.
For CSUN, Edwards also put a shot on frame in the 78th minute while the Mustangs had a late look from Charlie Hogan just in front of the goal on the right, but his shot went high.
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH TERRY DAVILA
"If you want to look at it as a single component thing, we're disappointed with the result because we thought we were the better team on the night. But if you look at the season as a whole and what we've gone through -- to still be eliminated from the tournament and play the top team in our league and match them, obviously if you want to look at statistics, ball possession, opportunities in the box, you could say that we've dominated statistically. We're a team that's responding to adversity and trying to grow as a team each day.
"Marley Edwards is a role model student-athlete. He's a tremendous person and he's done tremendous things for his family. He is a leader of his family, a leader in the classroom and he's a super talent on the field. Over the last couple of days, I think I've taught him something about the game and how important the physical element of the game is. He's adapted and he was rewarded with a goal tonight. You could arguably consider him the player of the match. I'm very happy for him."
